The Korean government on Monday decided not to extend what is called “the game shutdown system” to mobile games, which run on smartphones and tablet computers.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that mobile games will be excluded from the mandatory game shutdown system, which prohibits gamers aged 16 or under from connecting to online games between midnight and 6 a.m., a controversial policy aimed at protecting younger people from gaming addiction.

The official notice stipulated that only PC-based online games and Web games are subject to the shutdown regulations.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said last September that it was planning to expand the system to mobile-based games, a movement that sparked disputes in the local game industry.

여가부 항복? 셧다운제 확대 안한다

정부가 스마트폰과 태블릿PC를 기반으로 하는 모바일 게임을 게임 셧다운제로 제재하지 않기로 결정했다.

여성가족부와 문화체육관광부는 4일 자정부터 오전6시 사이에 16세 이하 청소년들이 온라인 게임에 접속하지 못하도록 해 과도한 게임 중독을 방지하는 것을 내용으로 하는 ‘강제적 게임 셧다운제’에서 모바일 게임을 포함시키지 않기로 했다고 예고했다.

이번 행정예고는 게임 셧다운제가 PC기반 온라인 및 패키지 게임과 웹 게임들만을 대상으로 한다고 명시하고 있다.

한편 여성가족부는 지난해 9월 현행 게임 셧다운제를 모바일 게임으로까지 확장하겠다는 계획을 발표해 국내 게임업계와 갈등을 빚어 왔다. (코리아헤럴드)
