Lee Kyung-soo, minister at the Korean Embassy in Japan, was named the new deputy foreign minister Friday.

Lee succeeded Kim Kyou-hyun, who was recently promoted to vice minister in charge of political affairs.

Since entering the agency in 1981, Lee has served key posts including ambassador to Cambodia, director-general of South Asia-Pacific affairs, embassy councilor in Beijing and director of the Southeast Asian division.

The Foreign Ministry also selected Shin Dong-ik, deputy representative at the Korean mission to the U.N., as deputy minister for multilateral and global affairs, while Ahn Chong-ghee, consul-general at the Korean Consulate General in Shanghai, was named deputy minister for economic affairs.

Yim Geun-hyeong, a secretary for international affairs to National Assembly Speaker Kang Chang-hee, was announced as ambassador for performance evaluation of overseas missions.

Other new appointees are Consul-General in San Francisco Lee Jeong-gwan as ambassador for overseas Koreans and consular affairs, and Ambassador for Green Growth Shin Boo-nam as ambassador for climate change.
