South Korea and a group of 10 Southeast Asian nations will hold a high-level workshop to discuss ways to set up a joint cyber college in July of next year, the Education Ministry said Sunday.

The sides have pushed for the establishment of the school since the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations made a proposal during a special summit held on the South Korean resort island of Jeju in June 2009.

The workshop scheduled for Wednesday will discuss a master plan for the South Korea-ASEAN cyber college and will be attended by Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Dato’ Misran Karmain, the ministry said.

Also attending the meeting will be high-ranking education officials and university presidents from South Korea and four ASEAN nations ― Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar ― and the head of the ASEAN University Network, it said.

“The point is establishing a cyber college initially with the four ASEAN nations in July of next year and later expanding it to include all other ASEAN members,” a ministry official said, requesting anonymity.

The remaining six members are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei.
