Yonsei draws fire over bar plans

Yonsei University is drawing fire from within over a plan to open a campus bar, which would be the school’s first place to sell alcohol in its 120-year history.

Officials at the International Campus of Yonsei University in Incheon, expected to open in spring, were concerned with the lack of entertainment facilities nearby where students can socialize and relieve stress, and proposed that a bar be opened on campus grounds. However, the idea has drawn criticism for going against the traditions of the Christian university.

According to a steering committee headed by Yonsei president Kim Han-joong, measures are being looked into to establish a bar in the dormitories or the student center.

Located in a largely suburban area of apartments, research facilities and construction sites, Kim is concerned that students will not have a place to relieve stress.

There are other worries that illegal street vendors will attempt to exploit the students and create a dangerous environment.

“Among professors that honor the traditions and beliefs of Christianity there are many negative reactions to bringing in an unprecedented establishment,” said a religious studies professor who declined to be named.

Yonsei University and the Severance Medical School affiliated with the school were established in 1885 by Western missionaries.

Students had mixed reactions to the idea.

Moon Hyo-eun, a Yonsei senior who majors in architecture, said the proposal did not warrant controversy.

“I believe that there are no bars near the campus, so students will probably need one on school grounds,” said Moon.

“Drinking on campus is not a big deal; at the Sinchon campus students drink alcohol all the time, making it a common sight,” she said.

But Kwak Jung-yeon, another Yonsei student, had a different opinion.

“I don’t think that the school should be promoting alcohol,” said Kwak, an architecture major.

The Yonsei University International Campus will open this March with courses in Asian studies, pharmacy, pre-med and other disciplines.

They plan to run the campus as a residential college, where students will largely live on the campus in dormitories, a model commonly seen in the U.S.

개교 126년 연세대, 첫 '교내주점' 만드나

연세대가 개교 이래 첫 교내 '펍(PUBㆍ서양식 주점)'을 만드는 방안을 놓고 고심을 거듭하고 있다.

봄 학기에 정규 수업이 시작되는 인천 국제캠퍼스 주변에 상가가 없어 '학생 친 교 장소가 필요하다'며 설치 검토에 착수했지만, '기독교 학교 전통에 어긋난다'는 내부 여론도 만만찮아 절충안 논의가 한창이다.

26일 연세대에 따르면 국제캠퍼스 추진위원회(위원장 김한중 총장)는 이 교정의 기숙사 지하나 학생회관(종합관)에 펍을 만드는 계획을 검토하고 있다.

캠퍼스 인근 수 ㎞ 이내 지역이 상가ㆍ아파트ㆍ연구단지 공사장뿐이라 신입생이 고립감을 이기고 스트레스를 풀 곳이 복지 차원에서 필요하다는 것이다.

또 학생들의 억눌린 수요를 노려 포장마차 등 불법시설이 교정 주변에 들어서 면학 분위기와 안전이 나빠지는 문제도 막자는 것이 펍 찬성론 측 주장이다.

하지만 '교내에 술집만은 안된다'는 목소리도 높다.

연세대는 전신인 연희 전문학교와 세브란스 의학교가 모두 서양 선교사가 세운 미션스쿨이라 개교 후 126년 동안 캠퍼스에 술, 담배 판매가 허용된 적이 없다.

신과대의 한 교수는 "기독교 신앙과 전통을 중시하는 교원들 사이에서는 전례가 없는 시설을 만드는 것이 부담스럽다는 반응이 많다"고 내부 분위기를 전했다.

위원회 측은 학생 복지와 학내 전통을 해치지 않는 절충안을 찾느라 고심하고 있다.

예컨대 맥주 이상 도수가 높은 술은 팔지 않고 영업시간을 제한하는 원칙 외에도 펍을 임시 건물 형태로 운영하다 2012∼2013년 캠퍼스 인근 상권이 완성되면 폐쇄하는 안 등을 의논한다는 것이다.

한 대학 관계자는 "학내 문화 등을 볼 때 다소 미묘한 사안이다. 3∼4월 실제 캠퍼스에서 생활하는 학생들의 의견을 들어보고 최종안을 결정할 수도 있다"고 말했다.

국제 캠퍼스는 인천국제공항에서 차량으로 약 30분 거리인 송도지구 내에 들어 서는데 현재 1-1 단계 공사로 기숙사와 과학기술관 등 8개 건물이 완공된 상태다.

올해 3월부터는 언더우드국제대학(UIC)과 의ㆍ치ㆍ약대, 자유전공, 공대 IT명품 프로그램의 학생들이 전원 기숙사에서 지내며 영어 교양 교육을 받는 '레지덴셜 칼리지(Residential College)' 제도가 운영된다.
