Warship Choi Young departs from Libya with 32 S. Koreans aboard

A South Korean warship is on the way to Malta on Friday after departing from Libya with 32 passengers aboard as part of efforts to evacuate its nationals from the North African nation engulfed in bloody turmoil, an official said.

The 4,500-ton destroyer Choi Young left the port of Tripoli at 4 p.m. Thursday (11 p.m. Korean time) and is scheduled to arrive at the nearby island of Malta around 7 a.m., the foreign ministry official said.

   After arriving in Malta, the warship plans to remain on a standby in the region in case further evacuation needs arise. The ship had been stationed in waters near Somalia for anti-piracy operations before being dispatched to Libya.

   Hundreds of South Koreans have left Libya by air and land over the past week as clashes between anti-government protesters and forces loyal to the country's leader, Moammar Gadhafi, intensify.

The clashes are believed to have left hundreds of people dead and thousands injured.

   Officials said that almost all South Koreans wishing to leave Libya would be evacuated as early as this weekend. About 100 people still want to remain in the country, though the number could change if the situation worsens, they said. (Yonhap News)

최영함 트리폴리 출항..4일 몰타 도착

    (서울=연합뉴스) 정묘정 기자 = 리비아에 남아 있는 우리 국민 철수를 지원하기 위해 투입된 청해부대 최영함이 3일 오후 4시(이하 현지시간)께 트리폴리항을 출발 했다.

    외교통상부에 따르면 최영함은 이날 낮 12시15분께 트리폴리에 입항했으며, 교 민 32명을 태운 뒤 지중해 몰타를 향해 출항했다.

    최영함은 4일 오전 7시께 몰타에 도착할 예정이며, 이후 트리폴리 외항으로 복 귀해 대기하면서 교민 추가 철수를 지원할 계획이다.

    최영함은 애초 트리폴리를 거쳐 시르테와 미수라타에 차례로 입항할 계획이었지만, 트리폴리 이외 지역에는 대우건설과 현대건설에서 임차한 외국 선박이 투입됨에 따라 우선 트리폴리 지역의 교민만을 철수시키기로 했다.

    최영함은 교민을 몰타까지 안전하게 이송한 뒤 트리폴리 외항으로 복귀해 대기 하면서 추가 교민 철수를 지원할 예정이다.
