Chinese astronomers say they are using survey instruments in Antarctica to search actively for Earth-like planets that may sustain life.

They installed the first of three Antarctic Survey Telescopes at Dome Argus, located at the highest elevation on the Antarctic continent, at the beginning of the year, China‘s official Xinhua news agency reported.

They use satellite phones to give orders to and receive data from their unmanned survey instruments in the harsh environment but can only receive limited amounts of data over the link.

“We will send people there to retrieve observation data next spring. I hope we can find some likely candidates. It’s hard to say precisely how many, but I hope there are no less than 10,” Wang Lifan, a director of the Chinese Center for Antarctic Astronomy, said.

“Such planets likely exist in the Milky Way, with a possible distance of thousands of light years from us,” he said.

Chinese scientists are also planning to set up an Antarctic observatory to further boost their research and broaden the search for habitable planets.

“Antarctica has the best conditions on Earth for astronomical observation, as it has very flat ground, a transparent atmosphere and little turbulence,” Wang said. “The ground-based telescopes here will bring us precious information from the universe.” (UPI)

중국 천문학 연구팀이 ‘생명체가 살 수 있는’ 행성에 대한 탐사를 보다 활성화 하기 위해 장비가 설치된 남극대륙으로 직접 갈 예정이라고 밝혔다.

이 연구팀은 올해 초 남극대륙에서 가장 높은 지점인 돔아르고스(Dome Argus)에 놓일 남극탐사용 천체망원경 3기 가운데 첫 번째를 설치한 바 있다고 중국 공영방송 신화통신이 보도했다.

연구팀은 열악한 환경에 설치된 이 무인탐사장비를 조작하고 데이터를 주고받기 위해 기존에는 위성전화를 사용해 왔지만 이 방법을 통해서는 제한된 양의 데이터만을 주고받을 수 있다고 밝혔다.

중국남극천문센터의 왕리판은 “내년 봄 즈음 인원을 파견할 예정이며 아직 확정되는 바는 없지만 10명 이상으로 파견단이 구성될 것”이라고 말하며 “이번에 탐사 대상이 되는 행성들은 은하수 부근에 존재할 가능성이 높으며 지구에서는 수천 광년 떨어진 곳에 있을 것으로 예상된다”고 덧붙였다.

한편 중국 과학계에서는 남극에 관측소를 설치해 생명체가 살수 있는 행성에 대한 탐사와 연구를 촉진할 계획인 것으로 알려졌다. (코리아헤럴드)
