South Korea has finished 20th in the gold medal tally at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games.

At the quadrennial event for athletes with disabilities, which came to an end in Brazil on Sunday (local time), South Korean Paralympians won a total of 35 medals -- seven gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze. A total of 139 athletes and officials from South Korea participated in 11 sports at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, which ran from Sept. 7-18, with a goal of winning 11 gold medals and finishing inside the top 12. South Korea, however, failed to achieve both gold medal and the medal standings target in Rio.

At the 2012 London Paralympics, South Korea finished 12th with nine gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals.

South Korean athletes won four gold medals from swimming and one each from judo, table tennis and boccia at the Rio Paralympics.

Jo Gi-seong delivered three gold medals in swimming, winning the men's 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events.

China finished first in the medal standings in gold medal order with 107 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze medals, followed by Britain with 64 gold, 39 silver and 44 bronze medals. Ukraine was third with 41 gold, 37 silver and 39 bronze medals.

North Korea, which participated in its second Paralympics, failed to win a medal. North Korea was represented by two athletes and 13 officials in Rio.  (Yonhap)
