An 11-year-old boy in Russia has discovered the almost-complete 30,000-year-old carcass of a woolly mammoth, Russian media reported.

Yevgeny Salinder found the 1,100-pound mammoth in the tundra of the Taymyr peninsula in northern Russia, Moscow News said.

Scientists using axes and steam hoses worked for a week to dig it out of the permafrost it's been encased in for centuries.

Woolly mammoths have been found in the permafrost in Siberia since at least 1929, but this is one of the best preserved with tusks, mouth and rib cage almost completely intact, NewScientist.com reported.

The mammoth is informally being called Zhenya, Yevgeny's nickname, but is officially the Sopkarga mammoth.

Paleontologists in Moscow plan to study the mammoth before it is returned to the Taymyr Natural History Museum for permanent display. (UPI)

예브게니 살린데르는(woolly mammoth) 무게가 약 500kg (1,100 파운드)에 달하는 매머드를 타이미르 반도의 툰드라에서 발견했다.

과학자들은 도끼와 증기를 이용해 수 세기간 영구동토층(permafrost , 永久凍土層)에 묻혀있던 매머드의 시체를 꺼내는 작업을 일주일간 벌였다.

매머드는1929년부터 시베리아 지방에서 발견되곤 했지만, 이번 잔해는 최상의 보존된 상태로 엄니와 입, 흉곽을 모두 갖추고 있었다.

이 매머드의 이름은 비공식적으로는 예브게니의 별명을 그대로 본 따 ‘젠야’로, 공식적으로는 솝카르가 매머스로 불리게 된다.

모스크바의 고생물학자들은 매머드가 타이비르 자연 역사 박물관에 영구적 전시를 위해 옮겨지기 전 연구할 계획임을 밝혔다.
