A Texas woman who lost both arms to flesh-eating bacteria has been approved for a double arm transplant, doctors in Boston said Wednesday.

Katy Hayes appeared at a news conference with doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, The Boston Globe reported. She would be the first patient in the United States to undergo the procedure, although it has been carried out in Germany.

Doctors told reporters if the surgery is successful Hayes will be able to bend her elbow and carry out tasks such as getting out of a wheelchair. They said they were still unsure if she would be able to perform more exacting tasks with her hands.

“I have to be baby-sat, which is ridiculous. I‘m 44 years old,” Hayes said. “I’m really looking forward to having my independence back.”

Hayes, who was formerly a massage therapist, said the experience has been painful. Her husband gave up his job as a middle-school teacher to move to the Boston area with her for treatment.

이식을 담당할 의사들은 수술이 성공할 경우 헤이즈는 팔꿈치를 굽힐 수 있고 휠체어에서 나오는 등의 일상적 일을 행할 수 있게 될 것이라고 취재진에게 밝혔다. 그러나 이들은 아직 환자가 손을 이용한 정교한 작업까지 행할 수 있게 될지는 불투명하다고 덧붙였다.

마사지 테라피스트인 헤이즈 씨는 두 팔 없이 산다는 것은 매우 고통스러웠다고 말했다. 그녀의 남편은 중학교 교사로서의 일자리도 버리고 보스톤으로 건너와 아내의 간병에 매진하고 있다. (코리아헤럴드)
