Some 41,000 years ago a complete reversal of the Earth’s magnetic field occurred and compass needles would have pointed south not north, German scientists say.

Researchers at the Helmholtz Center Potsdam -- GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences report the most remarkable feature of the phenomenon was the speed of the reversal.

“The field geometry of reversed polarity, with field lines pointing into the opposite direction when compared to today‘s configuration, lasted for only about 440 years, and it was associated with a field strength that was only one quarter of today’s field,” GFZ researchers Norbert Nowaczyk said.

“The actual polarity changes lasted only 250 years. In terms of geological time scales, that is very fast.”

Most reversals, which the Earth has experienced periodically, are estimated to take between 1,000 and 10,000 years.

During the reversal 41,000 years ago the field was very weak with only 5 percent of today‘s field strength, researchers said, and as a consequence Earth nearly completely lost its protection shield against hard cosmic rays, leading to a significantly increased radiation exposure. (UPI)

약 41,000년 전 지구의 양 극과 자기장이 반대로 바뀌었을 것이라고 독일 연구진이 발표했다.

포츠담 헬름홀츠센터의 연구소의 연구진들은 이러한 ‘대변혁’ 과정에서 가장 괄목할 만한 부분은 이러한 전환의 속도라고 말했다.

연구에 참여한 노버트 노박지크 연구원은 “실질적으로 양 극이 뒤바뀌는 데 걸린 기간은 불과 250년 밖에 되지 않는데, 지질학적 시각에서 보자면 이것은 굉장히 짧은 시간이다”라고 말했다.

지구의 역사에서 발생한 이와 같은 양극 전환의 주기는 약 1천 년에서 1만 년 정도로 추정되고 있다.

연구진은 41,000년 전의 양극 전환 과정에서 지구 자기장의 강도는 현재의 5%에 지나지 않는 수준으로 매우 약했다고 말했다. 또한 이러 인해 지구는 강력한 우주 광선을 차단해주는 막을 거의 대부분 상실해 표면에 막대한 양의 방사선을 노출하게 했다고 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
