Samsung Electronics, the world’s top chipmaker, topped the dynamic random access memory market in the first quarter of 2014, retaining its dominant position, which it has held since 1992.
The South Korean tech giant accounted for 37.2 percent of the world’s DRAM market in terms of sales in the January-March period, up 0.9 percent from a year earlier, the data compiled by industry tracker IHS iSuppli showed.
No. 2 player SK hynix took up 27.8 percent in the first quarter, meaning that the two South Korean players accounted for 65 percent of the global market.
If Samsung retains its top spot through December, it will have dominated the DRAM market for the 23rd consecutive year.
U.S. Micron Technology Inc. came in third at 26.9 percent, moving down a notch from the previous quarter when it temporarily outpaced SK hynix after a fire in September 2013 at SK’s chipmaking plant in the southern Chinese city of Wuxi suspended production. (Yonhap)
