15일 열렸던 보스턴 마라톤 대회 도중 세 명의 목숨을 앗아가고 백명이 넘는 사람을 다치게 한 폭발참사의 끔찍한 모습을 담은 한 장의 사진이 현지 언론에서 주목을 받고 있다.

폭파 직후 찍힌 것으로 추정되는 이 사진에서는 한 노인 마라토너가 쓰러져 있고 그 옆에서 경찰관들이 우왕좌왕하고 있어 당시 시민들이 느꼈을 혼란과 공포를 짐작할 수 있게 한다.

이 사진이 관심을 큰 관심을 끌자 미국 언론은 사진 속의 노인을 찾기에 나섰고 그가 워싱턴 주 레이크 스티븐즈 출신의 빌 이프리그 (78) 씨라는 점을 밝혀냈다.

AP통신 등 외신에 따르면 이프리그 씨는 두 개의 폭탄 중 하나가 터질 당시 결승선 근처에 있었다고 한다. 그는 인터뷰에서 자신이 폭탄과 1.5미터 거리에 있어 “아슬아슬했다”면서 이 사건에 의해서 “두려움에 떨었다”고 전했다.

폭탄의 여파로 바닥에 넘어진 그는 마라톤 관계자들의 도움을 받아 자리를 벗어났으며 무릎을 약간 긁히는 등 가벼운 상처만을 입었다고 한다.

이프리그 씨는 보스턴 마라톤에만 세 번째 참가하고 있으며, 그의 아들 마크 씨에 따르면 그 외에도 많은 마라톤 대회에 참가해왔다고 한다.

이날 일어난 보스턴 마라톤 참사에서는 결승선 근처에서 폭탄 두 개가 터져 100여명이 넘는 사상자를 냈다. 오바마 미국 대통령은 “범인을 반드시 잡을 것”이라고 강력한 의지를 천명했으며, 당국에서는 이 사건을 테러로 규정하고 수사를 진행하고 있다.

After the photo went viral online, the U.S. media tracked down the man in the picture and identified him as 78-year-old Bill Iffrig from Lake Stevens, Washington.

According to the Associated Press, Iffrig was near the finish line when he was knocked down by one of the two bombs. Iffrig said he was just 1.5 meters away from the bomb and that it was a “close one.”

He was hoisted up by race officials and walked away with minimal injury.

Iffrig is a third-time participant in the Boston Marathon.

On Monday, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing at least three people and injuring over 140.
