Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has started mass production of 8-gigabit graphic memory chips that adopt 20-nanometer technology, completing the full 20-nano level lineup in mobiles, servers, PCs and graphics.

The Graphics Double Data Rate 5 is the advanced version of the preceding 4-gigabit GDDR5 that enables faster data processing with better power efficiency, as well as a slimmer design for a device, the company said in a statement.

The graphic DRAM is widely used in 3-D games or devices that play videos with a high resolution. With only eight new 20-nano, 8-gigabit GDDR5 chips, a device can have density of 8 gigabytes, the largest produced so far that is needed in game consoles.

With two of those chips can process graphic images at a rate of up to 64 gigabytes per second, which is equivalent to processing 12 full HD DVDs in a second.

Samsung said it will continue efforts to expand the production of its 20-nano DRAM products in a wider range of densities, including 4 gigabit and 6 gigabit, to keep the top spot in the high-end memory chip market. (Yonhap)
