South Korea's No. 2 tech giant, LG Electronics Inc., said Sunday it will take "strong" action against sales of counterfeit G3 smartphones in China by joining forces with Beijing authorities.

LG said the move came as a number of smartphone retailers in China are selling the fake G3 smartphones at a price tag of less than $100 on major websites, including Taobao and Baidu, while claiming the phones are genuine products with official certificates.

The long-term evolution version of the product was initially released at a price of 899,800 won ($812.97) in South Korea.

"The fake smartphones come with low-end Chinese application processors, memory chips, and batteries," the company said. "LG will take strong actions against any intentional violation of our brand, technology, and designs."

LG added it has requested the websites to suspend sales of such products, while joining forces with the Chinese authorities to root out the fake products.

First introduced in May 2014, the phone has a 5.5-inch screen whose quality is four times that of standard high-definition resolution and features the world's first 2,560X1,440 Quad HD display. (Yonhap)
