Samsung Electronics Co. has earned recognition from international agencies for the use of eco-friendly materials in the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, the company said Thursday.
The two models, due to hit shelves April 10, have been certified by the U.S. Underwriters Laboratories with a Sustainability Product Certification for the recycled plastic used in the battery recharger, Samsung said in a statement.
The UL has given a Platinum certification to the new Galaxy handsets, the highest level for environmental testing, as they met the requirements for minimizing the impact from using harmful substances.
The new Samsung smartphones also earned a CO2 Measured Label from British Carbon Trust for improved energy efficiency with the power saving function.
They were given a similar eco-friendly certification from Brazil's technology standard agency ABNT and the Ecological Union of Russia, the company added.
Samsung said it made about 20 percent of the battery recharger with recycled plastic. The packaging, including the instruction sheet that comes with the box, is printed with a soybean oil-based ink.
Samsung has so far won such eco-friendly certifications for over 3,000 products from 14 related agencies worldwide since 2004, according to the company. (Yonhap)
