LG Uplus Inc., South Korea's smallest mobile carrier, unveiled a mobile video portal Monday that offers all existing video content from real-time TV and movies to e-learning in one single package, as part of a push into the mobile visual content business.
The mobile video portal, available through the long-term evolution network, allows users to enjoy over 130,000 visual materials such as video-on-demand, the latest movies, short TV clips and User Created Content, the mobile carrier said.
If a user subscribes to a premium product, it gives the user access to e-learning programs ranging from language studies, documentary, travel, cuisine and health, it added.
The mobile video package is new in the way that no other mobile carriers in South Korea have so far come up with such an integrated visual content site for smartphone users.
The move came as LG Uplus, a smaller rival of SK Telecom Co. and KT Corp. is seeking to find a new growth engine in mobile visual content, as the high penetration rate of smartphones in the country bodes well for the business.
Investing in mobile video streaming has been widely pushed by local IT companies as well as telecom firms. Naver Corp., the top portal operator, upgraded its TV streaming section at the namesake search engine. Its archrival Daum Kakao Corp., has recently debuted a similar platform named KakaoTV, offered to its messenger users while they're chatting with friends via smartphones. (Yonhap)
