U.S. teen dies of over-hydration
A 17-year-old boy from Atlanta has died from over-hydration, according to news reports.
The boy, who was a high school rugby player, drank “four gallons of fluids -- two of water and two of Gatorade” -- while at practice one day.
The young player complained of a stomachache and collapsed as soon as he arrived home. He was brought immediately to the hospital and attached to ventilators for five days. After doctors said there was no brain activity, they took him off life support and he “quickly passed away.”
Doctors say that the teen’s brain was swollen due to over-hydration. However, the autopsy results have yet to be announced.
Devastated over the boy’s death, his aunt said that “the death of a healthy and vibrant young boy is incomprehensible.”
