지난 4월 총선과 12월 대선에 연이어 참패한 민주당의 비대위원장 대표에 문희상 의원이 합의 추대되었다.

문희상 의원은 몇 달 뒤 있을 전당대회에서 당 대표가 공식적으로 선출될 때까지 대표직을 수행한다. 이에 문 의원은 대선 패배의 충격을 수습하고 당을 새로이 이끌 임무를 맡게 되었다. 그러나 문 의원이 고 노무현 정부에서 대표적으로 활동한 인물이라는 점에서, 그가 기존과 차별화하여 정치 쇄신의 과제를 이룰 수 있을까에 대해 일부는 의문을 품고 있다.

민주당은 2003년 노무현 정부가 들어선 이래 지난 10년 간 친 노무현 인사들과 친 김대중 인사들이 대립해왔다. 한광옥 등 몇몇 친 김대중 의원들은 지난 대선에서 새누리당으로 전향하기도 했다.

“작년의 대선 실패와는 관련이 없으면서, 중립적인 위치에 있는 사람이 비대위 대표로 선출되어야 한다고 의견 일치를 보았습니다.” 선출 과정에 참여한 민주당 김동철 의원이 전했다.

문희상 의원은 고 노무현 정부에서 핵심적인 역할을 했음에도 문재인 후보를 내세운 지난 대선에서 선거운동에 적극적으로 참여하지 않은 것으로 알려졌다. 문재인 역시 고 노무현 대통령의 비서실장으로서 친 노무현 인물이다.

“누가 뽑히든 100% 만족스럽지는 못할 겁니다.”라고 어느 세력에도 속하지 않은 주승용 의원이 말했다. 그는 “대표가 친노세력에서 선출되었고, 이제 지켜봐야 할 때입니다.”라고 말했다.

한편, 문희상 의원은 비대위 대표로 선출되고 열린 기자회견에서 당이 대선의 패배를 딛고 일어서기 위해 철저한 반성을 할 것이라고 말했다.

DUP chooses old face as interim leader


The Democratic United Party, still reeling from its defeat in the Dec. 19 presidential election, on Wednesday selected Moon Hee-sang, a five-term lawmaker and former chief of staff to late President Roh Moo-hyun, to head its interim emergency leadership committee.

Critics raise doubt on whether Moon, considered an old-guard figure, can revive the debilitated party in the wake of its double loss in the April parliamentary and December presidential elections last year.

A member of the “pro-Roh” faction within the DUP, Moon will serve until the party formally elects a new chairman at a party convention in May.

Several big-name players of the progressive party who defected last year to join the presidential campaign of the conservative Saenuri Party’s Park Geun-hye, such as Han Gwang-ok, were members of an opposing faction loyal to late President Kim Dae-jung. The two factions have often engaged in bitter infightings over the past 10 years.

“There was a consensus that the person chosen to head the emergency leadership committee should not be someone who is responsible for the loss in the presidential election and should have a pale partisan color,” said DUP Rep. Kim Dong-cheol, who participated in the selection process.

Despite his political association with the deceased president, Moon did not undertake a major role in the presidential campaign of Moon Jae-in — with whom he bears no relation — who had also served as presidential chief of staff to Roh.

But Moon’s selection raised several eyebrows as the party failed to present a fresh, new face.

“Whoever is chosen (as interim leader), it would be difficult to be satisfied 100 percent,” said DUP Rep. Joo Seung-yong, who is not affiliated with any particular faction. “But now that a member of the pro-Roh faction has been chosen to head the emergency committee, how things will turn out will be something to watch for.”

Moon, meanwhile, promised in a press conference after his selection that the party would engage in serious self-reflection to recuperate from the electoral defeat.

“(The party) will throw away all vested rights and fiercely reform (itself),” Moon told reporters. “(I) will transform the DUP as if starting from scratch once again.”
