6일 오전 3시40분께 고(故) 최진실씨의 전 남편인 전직 프로야구 선수 조성민(40)씨가 서울 강남구 도곡동 여자친구의 아파트에 숨져 있는 것을 조씨의 여자친구 A(40)씨가 발견했다.

서울 수서경찰서에 따르면 조씨는 욕실 샤워기 거치대에 가죽 허리띠로 목을 맨 채로 발견됐다. 조씨는 출동한 119구급대원에 의해 인근 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 이미 숨진 상태였다.

경찰 조사결과 조씨는 발견 당시 카키색 면 티와 곤색 트레이닝복 바지를 입고 있었으며 외부 침입흔적이나 타살로 의심할 만한 외상은 발견되지 않았다.

조씨는 전날 저녁 이 아파트에서 A씨와 술을 마셨으며 A씨로부터 이별을 통보 받은 것으로 전해졌다. 조씨는 동갑내기인 A씨가 월세로 거주하는 이 원룸형 아파트에 자주 왕래한 것으로 알려졌다.

경찰은 CCTV를 확인해 자정께 A씨가 다른 약속이 있어 밖에 나갔다 들어온 6일 0시5분∼3시40분 사이를 조씨의 사망시각으로 추정하고 있다.

조씨는 0시 11분께 자신의 어머니에게 “저도 한국에서 살 길이 없네요. 엄마한테 죄송하지만 아들 없는 걸로 치세요”라는 문자메세지를 보냈고, 5분 뒤에는 여자 친구에게 “내 인생에 마지막이 자기와 함께하지 못해서 가슴이 아프다. 꿋꿋이 잘 살아”라고 카카오톡 메시지를 보냈다.

유서는 아직 발견되지 않았으나 경찰은 자살로 추정하고 수사를 진행 중이다.

경찰은 유족•국립과학수사연구원과 협의해 내일 중으로 조씨의 시신을 부검할 계획이다.

조씨의 시신은 일단 강남세브란스 병원 영안실에 안치됐으나 빈소는 서울 성북구 고대안암병원에 차려지고 있다.

일본 프로야구 요미우리 자이언츠에서 뛰었던 조씨는 2000년 12월 최진실씨와 결혼해 1남1녀를 뒀으나 2004년 9월 파경을 맞았고, 최진실씨는 2008년 10월 스스로 목숨을 끊어 큰 충격을 줬다. 이어 최진실씨의 동생이자 조씨의 전 처남인 최진영씨도 2010년 3월 자택에서 목을 매 세상을 떠났다.

최진실씨 사망 후 조씨는 자녀의 양육권과 친권을 놓고 유족과 갈등을 빚다 아이들의 외할머니에게 권리를 넘겼으나 조씨의 자녀 친권을 둘러싼 논란 속에 일명 '최진실법'으로 불리는 친권 자동부활 금지제가 마련돼 올해 7월부터 시행에 들어가게 됐다. 조씨의 지인들에 따르면 조씨는 이를 심적으로 힘들어 했던 것으로도 알려졌다.

조씨는 재작년 프로야구 두산 베어스에서 2군 재활코치로 지도자의 길을 걸었으나 작년 11월초 재계약을 포기했으며 작년 11월에는 도곡동의 한 일본식 선술집에서 폭행사건에 연류돼 경찰 조사를 받기도 했다.

Ex-husband of Choi Jin-sil kills self


Cho Sung-min, the ex-husband of late actress Choi Jin-sil and a former star baseball player, was found dead early Sunday morning in an apparent suicide, police said.

The body of Cho, 39, was discovered by his girlfriend, hanged in the bathroom of her apartment in Dogok-dong, southern Seoul, at around 5:26 a.m. according to Suseo Police Station, which is investigating the case.

“We have found no signs yet of a break-in or any injuries to suspect his death to be a homicide,” the police said a press briefing. “We plan to ask for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of his death.”

According to the investigators, Cho drank with his girlfriend the night before his death, where he was informed of the end of their relationship.

The girlfriend, whose name was withdrawn by police, then left the house and returned about three and a half hours later only to find Cho hanging from the bathroom shower using his belt.

Cho sent messages to his mother and girlfriend via mobile phone, hinting at suicide, police said.

“Take it as if you never had a son,” reads the message sent to his mother. No will was found at the scene.

Cho had a turbulent career and personal life.

With attractive looks and top-class pitching skills, he had many female fans in Korea and Japan. His best years as a pro-baseball player were 1997-1998 with Japan’s Yomiuri Giants. After the short peak time, however, his career went downhill, with injuries and a prolonged slump. In 2005, he stood on the pitching mound again, playing for Korea’s Hanwha Eagles, but instead of making an impressive comeback, he had to leave the team in 2007 with a disappointing performance.

He briefly worked as a TV commentator. Most recently, he worked as a coach for the Doosan Bears in 2011, but did not renew his contract last November.

His marriage with Choi in 2000 and its ugly ending in 2004, involving violence and adultery, grabbed headlines in Korea. The couple had two children -- one daughter and one son.

Choi committed suicide by hanging in October 2008. A year and a half later, her younger brother and singer Jin-young also killed himself.
