한국 가톨릭교회 주교들이 프란치스코 교황에게  한반도 위기를 타개하기 위한 평화의 중재자 역할을 해달라고 요청했다.
    
한국 천주교 주교회 의장인 강우일 주교(제주교구장)은 6일(현지시간) 교황청 피데스 통신과의 인터뷰에서 "한국인들은 전반적으로 크게 두려워하지는 않지만  현재 상황에 대한 우려는 여전히 존재한다"며 "치명적 무기를 이용한 현대의 전쟁은 모두에게 재앙이 될 것"이라고 말했다.
    
강 주교는 이어 "프란치스코 교황에게 한반도 상황에 대해 계속 관심을 갖고 한국과 러시아, 미국, 중국 지도자들에게 평화를 위해 진지하게 노력해줄 것을 요청드린다"고 덧붙였다.

S. Korean bishops ask pope for mediation

VATICAN CITY -- South Korean bishops have called on Pope Francis to act as a peace mediator amid nuclear talks in concerning their country.

The bishops' request came Friday during an interview with the Fides Agency, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

"The dominating sentiment amongst the South Korean population isn't so much fear but concern and bitterness for the current situation," said Monsignor Peter Kang U-il. "A contemporary war, with the lethal weapons that exist, would be a catastrophe for all involved.

"We appeal to Pope Francis: We thank him for his prayers and hope he continues to pay attention to the Korean peninsula asking for Korean, Russian, American and Chinese leaders to work seriously for peace," he said. (UPI)
