A new study suggests that men are prompted by a hormone which keeps them distant from other attractive women.

Rene Hurlemann, a researcher at the University of Bonn in Germany, said in a statement that “oxytocin,” a hormone which is known to contribute to pair-bonding, encourages men to expand their personal emotional barrier when attractive women are around.

Hurlemann added that the barrier is activated only when those men are in relationships. Single men do not show such response even when they are dosed with oxytocin.

Researchers found that men in relationships who got the oxytocin dose were also slower than other men to respond to photographs of beautiful women.

Larry Young, another expert in the oxytocin researcher at Emory University, said this study suggests the general role of oxytocin in promoting monogamous behavior is conserved from rodents to man.

사랑에 빠진 남자들은 호르몬의 영향으로 인해 다른 매력적인 여성들이 가까이 오는 것을 막게 된다는 연구결과가 독일에서 나왔다.

독일 본 대학교 연구원 레네 헐레만은 짝짓기에 영향을 미치는 호르몬인 ‘옥시토신’이 남자들로 하여금 매력적인 여성이 주변에 오면 보이지 않는 방어막을 형성하게 한다고 말했다.

헐레만 박사는 또한 이러한 현상은 사랑에 빠진 남성들의 경우에만 나타나며, 싱글 남성들의 경우 인위적으로 옥시토신을 투여받은 경우라도 나타나지 않았다고 덧붙였다.

연구진은 또한 옥시토신을 형성한 사랑에 빠진 남성들의 경우 아름다운 여성의 사진을 보고 반응을 일으키는 시간 또한 다른 남성들에 비해 늦게 나타남을 밝혀냈다.

에머리 대학교의 옥시토신 호르몬 연구자인 래리 영은 이와 같은 현상이 설치류 동물들부터 인류에 이르기 까지 보편적으로 나타난다고 설명했다. (코리아헤럴드)
