SITUATION 가처분 소득이 줄어든다고 할 때

영어답게 Increasing housing costs further shrink disposable income.

dispose는 처분한다는 뜻을 지닙니다. disposable income은 흔히 말하는 ‘가처분 소득’, 즉 소비나 저축에 쓸 수 있는 소득을 일컫죠. ‘쓸 돈이 줄어들게 만든다’를 좀 근사하게 shrink disposable income라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

반복해서 설명드립니다만, 어떤 생각을 말하기 위해 평범한 표현과 조금 더 묘사적인 표현을 함께 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 영어는 반복을 싫어하므로 번갈아 가며 활용하기 위해서이기도 하고, 영어식 표현법을 익히기 위해서이기도 합니다. 여기서도 함께 싸웠다는 의미를 좀 더 구체적으로 표현하기 위해 side by side를 활용했습니다. 어려운 표현은 아니지만 together보다 훨씬 구체적이고 묘사적인 느낌을 줄 수 있죠.

영어답게 Crossing the barrier of culture and language isn't easy.

차이를 극복하는 것을 벽을 넘어서는 것에 빗대어 표현할 수 있습니다. 벽을 의미하는 다른 단어 wall을 활용하여 cross the wall이라고 할 수도 있고, 벽을 뚫고 지나간다는 뜻으로 break through the wall이라고 말할 수도 있습니다.

A 아동 학대에 대한 처벌이 너무 약해. 아동 학대로 유죄 판결을 받는 사람은 좀 더 강한 처벌을 해야 해.

SITUATION 강하게 처벌한다고 할 때

영어답게 We should give more than a slap on the wrist to those who are guilty of child abuse.

slap on the wrist는 손목을 살짝 때리는 것을 말합니다. 우리말 ‘솜방망이 처벌’에 해당하는 영어 표현이죠. 좀 더 강한 처벌을 내려야 한다는 생각을 more than a slap on the wrist라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

breakthrough는 정체된 상태를 뚫고 나가게 만드는 돌파구나 획기적인 발전을 일컫는 말입니다. 특히 과학기술의 획기적인 발전을 말하죠. 인공지능이라는 신기술이 등장을 설명할 때도 유용합니다.
