A 2,500-ton South Korean warship will depart the country this week to participate in a naval parade in Indonesia next week, the Navy said Monday.
The guide missile-equipped frigate Jeonbuk will depart from a naval base in the southern port city of Busan on Tuesday to participate in the Sail Tomini 2015, an international naval parade, marking the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's independence from the Netherlands.
Five more countries will take part in the naval parade to be held on Oct. 19: the United States, China, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.
"The participation of a warship and a South Korean delegation will upgrade naval security cooperation and other military friendships with Indonesia," the Navy said in its news release.
An accompanying delegation, led by Navy Rear Adm. Kim Deok-ki, plans to discuss ways to step up cooperation in the defense industry and other military sectors with the participating countries, the Navy also added.
The new frigate Jeonbuk was put into operation earlier this year and this is the first time the South is dispatching its Incheon-class frigate, equipped with a three-dimensional radar system, anti-air and anti-submarine guided missiles and torpedoes to an international naval fair. (Yonhap)
