NASA scientists on Wednesday attempted to squash rumors that the world is coming to an end on Dec. 21, and warned of negative effects deriving from such fears.

“There is no true issue here. This is just a manufactured fantasy,” said NASA’s astrobiologist David Morrison during a NASA Google+ Hangout event. “While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned.”

According to a report on the Livescience website, Morrison and other NASA officials hosted an hour-long video chat session with Internet users to debunk myths about the so-called “doomsday rumors.”

They said that no celestial threats -- namely a near-Earth object or extra-powerful solar flare -- were likely in the near future. The only asteroid expected to brush by our planet will do so on February of next year, but will miss Earth by 6,378 kilometers, according to scientists.

Other far-fetched rumors, such as Earth being mysteriously sucked into a black hole at the center of the Milky Way, or planet-wide blackout was also dismissed by scientists.

Morrison said concerns that sprout from misleading rumors have serious consequences for the lives of some people. He said he has been getting mail from concerned citizens, complaining they cannot eat or sleep because they are too worried.

Morrison added that the issue is a serious matter for impressionable children.

Astronomers however, did point out one factor that can endanger the well-being of the planet: us.

“The greatest threat to Earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself,” said Mitzi Adams, a heliophysicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

과학자들이 향간에 떠돌고 있는 ‘2012년 지구 멸망설’에 대해 설명하고 그 위험성에 대해 경고하고 나섰다.

라이브사이언스 닷컴 등은 미항공우주국 (NASA: 나사) 과학자들이 구글과 합작 이벤트를 통해 약 한시간에 걸쳐 인터넷으로 ‘지구멸망설’에 대한 질문을 답변해주는 시간을 가졌다고 보도했다.

이들은 먼저 2012년 12월 21일에 지구가 멸망할 것이라는 설은 아무 근거가 없으며, 이 날짜 전후에 지구에 근접하는 천체도 없고 태양 플레이(flare)가 비정상적으로 팽창해 지구를 위협한다는 설도 터무니없다고 해명했다.

과학자들은 지구에 접근하는 소행성이 있긴 하지만, 이 소행성이 나타나는 것은 2013년2월 경이며 지구와의 충돌이 일어나진 않을 것이라고 덧붙였다.

또한 이들은 지구가 은하수 중심의 블랙홀로 빨려 들어간다느니 전 지구적인 정전이 있을 것이라는 낭설 역시 터무니없다고 일축했다.

나사의 우주생물학자 데이빗 모리슨은 지구 멸망설이 “만들어진 판타지에 불과하다”면서 “어떤 사람들에게 이것은 농담에 불구하겠지만 진심으로 걱정하고 있는 사람들이 있다”라며 그 위험성에 대해 경고했다.

그는 수많은 사람들이 자신에게 이메일과 우편을 통해 문의를 하고 있으며, 이 중 일부는 자살을 생각하고 있다고 말했다. 모리슨은 쉽게 외부의 영향을 받는 어린이들에게 이러한 점이 특히 문제가 될 수 있다고 강조했다.

한편 과학자들은 지구에 대한 가장 큰 위협이 외부적 원인이 아닌 지구 온난화 등 인간이 만들어내는 문제라고 덧붙였다.

물리학자 미치 아담스는 “올해 말이건 미래에건 지구를 가장 위협하는 것은 인류 그 자체에서 오는 것뿐”이라고 꼬집었다. (코리아헤럴드)
