South Korea's third attempt to send a space rocket from its own soil was again pushed back Thursday due to problems in the upper second-stage rocket of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1.

When the launch will be possible was to be determined later, according to Cho Yul-rae, vice minister for science and technology.

"Abnormal signals from the thrust vector system of the upper (second) stage rocket of Naro have been detected," he told a press briefing.

Thrust vectoring refers to the ability of an aircraft or rocket to manipulate the direction of the thrust from its engine, and thus control the altitude or angular velocity of the vehicle.

The rocket, also known as the Naro-1, was earlier set to be launched at 4 p.m., but the countdown was halted with less than 17 minutes left before the scheduled launch. (Yonhap News)

우리나라 첫 우주발사체(로켓) 나로호(KSLV-1)가 29일 발사 예정시각 오후 4시를 16분여 남겨놓고 상단(2단)부에서 문제가 감지돼 발사가 취소됐다.

단순한 신호 오류가 아니라 실제 부품의 문제로 밝혀지면 국제기구에 통보한 발사예정기한인 다음달 5일까지 재발사가 불가능하고, 이 경우 연내 3차 발사 추진 여부도 불투명해진다.

조율래 교육과학기술부 차관은 이날 발사 준비 중단 직후 발사통제동에서 "상단(2단) 추력방향제어기(TVC;Thurust Vector Control) 점검 과정에서 일부  전기신호(전류) 이상 신호가 감지돼 발사 준비를 중단했다"며 "정밀 조사 후 앞으로 일정을 정하겠다"고 밝혔다.

앞서 이날 나로호는 오후 4시 발사가 확정된 뒤 오후 1시 58분께부터 산화제와 연료(케로신), 헬륨 가스 주입 등의 절차까지는 순조롭게 진행됐으나, 자동 카운트다운 돌입(발사 전 15분) 직전에 상단부 추력제어기 이상으로 결국 발사 준비 자체가 중단됐다.

정밀 조사에 걸리는 시간과 나로호를 다시 발사조립동으로 옮긴 뒤 점검하고 다 시 세우는데 걸리는 시간 등을 감안할 때 사실상 다음달 5일 예정기한내 발사가 어려워진 상황이 아니냐는 관측도 나오고 있다. 채워진 연료(케로신)를 빼고 다시 채우는데 걸리는데만 2~3일이 걸리기 때문이다.

조 차관도 "정확한 원인 규명에 추가 시간이 소요될 것"이라고 내다봤다.

아울러 지금까지 당국은 이번 예정기한을 넘길 경우 올해 안에 무리하게 발사를 시도하지 않는다는 입장을 밝혀온만큼 연내 발사가 무산될 가능성도 배제할 수 없는 상황이다.
