S-Oil, one of Korea’s top oil refiners, launched a scholarship program to help college students lacking in family support, the company said Tuesday.

Chief Executive Officer Nasser Al-Mahasher visited “Seondeokwon” in northwestern Seoul to award “S-Oil Dream Scholarship” to 40 students from the orphanage. 

 

The selected students currently study machinery, electronics and chemical engineering at technical colleges. They received 2.5 million won ($2,200), respectively, and will continue to be supported until they complete studying.

“We would like to greatly support those under poor financial circumstance to be prepared with expertise and become meaningful members of the society,” the CEO said at the ceremony.

Company officials said the program is a part of its corporate social responsibility activities, which include financial support for children from the deceased fire fighters.

The beneficiaries, who make excellent academic achievements, will be prioritized when they apply for jobs in the company, the company added.
