Children living in Roman times showed off their social status through the shoes they wore, a recent research suggested.

According to a study led by Elizabeth Greene of the University of Western Ontario, Roman children were dressed to reveal their place in society.

“The role of dress in expressing status was prominent even for children of the very youngest ages,” Livescience.com quoted Greene as saying.

Greene and her colleagues looked at over 4,000 shoes found at Vindolanda, a Roman army fort in Northern Britain, and found that children’s footwear was decorated in accordance with their parents’ jobs.

For example a child’s shoe found in barracks, which supposedly would have been worn by a soldier’s child, was similar to a soldier’s boots.

A study also found that an infant shoe designed exactly like that of a Roman nobleman’s boot was found inside a house of a high-class Roman citizen. Greene said the young owner of the shoe would have been formally dressed by his or her parents to be shown off at social events.

The study findings imply that Romans were locked into their respective social class from very early stages of their lives.

“Even the infant children of the prefect were held to the expectations of dress according to one’s class,” Greene said.

Greene’s findings were presented at an annual meeting of Archaeological Institute of America.

그린과 그녀의 동료들은 영국 북부에 있는 고대 로마 요새인 빈돌란다에서 발견된 4,000여 켤레의 신발을 분석하여 이 중 아이들의 신발은 그 부모들이 신었던 신발과 비슷하게 디자인되었다는 점을 알게 되었다. 예를 들어 병영에서 발견된 아이의 신발은 당시 병사들이 신었던 신발과 모양이 매우 비슷했다.

또한 고위 관리의 집에서 발견된 유아용 신발은 높은 직위의 로마시민이 신는 신발과 동일한 모양이었는데, 그린은 이로 비추어 보아 당시 부모들은 어린 자식들에게 이렇듯 격식을 차린 옷차림을 하게 하고 사교모임 등에서 아이들을 소개했을 것이라고 추측했다.

이와 같은 점으로 미루어 보아, 로마인들은 매우 어렸을 때부터 사회 내에서 각자 차지하는 계급에 적용해야 했을 것이라고 그린은 말했다. “고위관리의 자녀라면 아주 어린 나이에서부터 자신의 계급에 맞는 옷차림을 할 것이 요구되었다”라고 그녀는 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)
