지난번에 이어 시사적인 내용을 말할 때 도움이 될 영어다운 표현들을 보겠습니다. 이번에도 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 시사이슈 편』에서 뽑았습니다.    

<경제>

A It seems the government keeps adding new welfare programs, despite the recent tax cuts.

B It won’t be long before all this spending empties out our national coffers.

A 최근 감세에도 불구하고 정부가 계속 새로운 복지제도를 추가하고 있는 것 같아.

B 계속 이렇게 써 대면 나라 곳간이 비는 데 얼마 걸리지 않을 거야.

SITUATION 나랏돈을 다 탕진한다고 할 때

평범하게 This spending will use up all of our nation’s money.

영어답게 This spending will empty out our national coffers.

큰 보물 상자나 궤짝을 coffer라고 합니다. 우리말로 ‘나라 곳간이 빈다’라고 하듯 나랏돈을 coffer에 담아 둔다고 생각하여 empties out our national coffers라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 국가 재정을 거덜 낸다는 의미로 쓸 수 있는 비유적 표현이죠.

<정치>

A That candidate was a human rights lawyer, but listen to him deny the rights of the immigrants.

B As a politician, everything’s easier when you lack moral fiber.

A 그 후보 인권 변호사였다면서 이민자의 권리를 부정하는 발언하는 것 좀 들어 봐.

B 정치인으로서 도덕성이 부족해야 오히려 더 편한 법이야.

SITUATION 도덕성을 말할 때

평범하게 As a politician, everything’s easier when you lack morality.

영어답게 As a politician, everything’s easier when you lack moral fiber.

도덕성은 moral fiber로 표현할 수 있습니다. fiber가 섬유 혹은 우리 몸의 근육을 구성하는 섬유질을 말하므로, moral fiber는 몸을 구성하는 도덕성이라는 섬유를 가리킨다고 생각하면 됩니다. 도덕적인 일을 해 나가는 힘이나 의지를 일컫죠. lack of moral fiber라고 하면 도덕성 혹은 도덕적인 의지가 부족하다는 말이 됩니다. 정치인의 도덕성에 문제가 있다고 할 때 활용할 수 있습니다.

<사회>

A I saw a TV program about how inconvenient it is for people with disabilities to move around Seoul.

B Any one of us can become disabled at any time. We must be proactive about disability rights.

A 장애인이 서울에서 돌아다니는 게 얼마나 불편한지 보여주는 TV프로그램을 봤어.

B 누구나 언제든 장애인이 될 수 있어. 장애인의 권리에 좀 더 적극적인 태도를 지녀야 해.

SITUATION 장애인의 권리를 말할 때

평범하게 We must be proactive about the rights of people with disabilities.

영어답게 We must be proactive about disability rights.

장애인의 권리는, 장애를 의미하는 disability를 활용하여 disability rights라고 간단히 말할 수 있습니다. 장애를 표현할 때 가장 일반적으로 쓰는 단어가 disability입니다. people with disabilities가 장애인을 일컫는 가장 일반적인 표현이죠. 예전에는 handicapped라는 표현을 쓰기도 했으나 차별적인 느낌이 강하다 하여 요즈음은 잘 활용하지 않습니다.

A I believe a society’s advancement can be measured by its accessibility policies.

B Ours falls short of the standards put in place by other industrialized countries.

A 한 사회의 발전 수준은 그 사회의 접근성 정책에 의해 측정될 수 있다고 생각해.

B 우리 사회는 아직 다른 산업국들의 기준에는 못 미치고 있어.

SITUATION 장애인이 불편 없이 이용할 수 있어야 한다고 말할 때

평범하게 A society’s advancement can be measured by how accessible facilities are for people with disabilities.

영어답게 A society’s advancement can be measured by its accessibility policies.

컴퓨터를 쓸 때 보게 되는 용어 '접근성'은 영어 accessibility를 번역한 말입니다. 신체적 제한을 가진 사람이 불편함 없이 쉽게 접근하고 사용할 수 있게 만들어 주는 도구나 방침을 일컫죠. 장애인이 불편 없이 활용할 수 있어야 한다고 말할 때 accessibility를 활용하면 됩니다.

<문화>

A What happened to the winner of that reality show? I think he’s been pretty much forgotten.

B I guess he just had his fifteen minutes of fame and faded away.

A 그 리얼리티 프로그램 승자 어떻게 되었어? 거의 잊혀진 것 같은데.

B 반짝 유명세를 누리고 사라진 것 같아.

SITUATION 잠시 유명세를 탄다고 할 때

평범하게 He became famous for a short period of time and faded away.

영어답게 He just had his fifteen minutes of fame and faded away.

팝아티스트 앤디 워홀이 In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes(미래에는 누구나 15분 동안 유명해질 수 있을 것이다).라고 말한 데서 유래한 표현입니다. 유명해지기도 쉽지만 그만큼 잊혀지기도 쉽다는 뜻이죠. fifteen minutes of fame은 반짝 유명해졌다가 금세 잊혀지는 존재를 설명할 때 잘 쓰입니다.
