Incheon airport operator under probe over tax evasion
The prosecution has launched an investigation into the operator of Incheon International Airport on suspicion of tax evasion.
“A probe is underway into Incheon International Airport Corp.’s tax evasion worth billions of won,” the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday.
The National Tax Service filed a complaint against the airport operator last month for a series of irregularities involving a service business run by IIAC in 2008. The operator allegedly evaded 900 billion won ($840 million) in taxes by not issuing tax invoices. Prosecutors plan to summon IIAC officials.
In 2008, the country’s tax watchdog repeatedly ordered IIAC to take corrective measures over tax payments and found three additional cases including unissued tax receipts this year. In response, IIAC reportedly said the tax office didn’t point out the three omissions.
“(We) thought there was no problem. There were no intentions,” it added.
The financial watchdog said IIAC neglected its duty of issuing invoices. “Issuing tax bills is a duty regardless of the authorities’ indication.”
