ATLANTA (Yonhap) ― Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers took his sixth loss of the Major League Baseball season on Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves, while suffering a hip injury in the process.

Ryu left the mound after getting two outs in the top of the sixth inning at Turner Field with the injury, as the Braves were clinging to a 3-2 lead. A trainer came out of the dugout as the South Korean pitcher pointed to the back of his right thigh. Jamey Wright relieved Ryu, and the Braves hung on to beat the Dodgers 3-2.

Ryu appeared to have suffered a hamstring injury, but the Dodgers announced after the game that Ryu had come down with a right gluteus muscle strain. He is listed as day-to-day. Ryu missed nearly a month of action earlier this year, from late April to late May, with inflammation in his left shoulder, and came back strong, winning six of his first seven starts off the disabled list.

Ryu gave up three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on six hits and two walks to fall to 13-6 this season. He struck out seven, but his ERA went up from 3.21 to 3.28. It marked only the fourth time in 23 starts this year that Ryu failed to pitch at least six innings.

In his first start against the Braves this season, Ryu blew an early 2-0 advantage, allowing the Braves to chop their way ahead.

The Dodgers scored twice on five hits off the Braves starter Ervin Santana in the top of the second. The Braves cut the deficit in half immediately in the bottom half of the frame, as Andrelton Simmons hit a grounder to score Evan Gattis from third.

Ryu said after the game he first felt some pain during the sixth inning but threw four more pitches before summoning a trainer.

“I didn’t have any problem before the game,” he said. “Looking back, maybe I should have taken myself out of the game when I first experienced pain.”

Ryu also said he doesn’t think his injury is too serious and that he should be able to recover quickly. “I’ve never felt any pain in this particular area before, and I am a bit concerned,” he said. “But I don’t think this will be anything severe.” 

Rays pound Rangers 10-1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ― Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer got his only two walks out of the way against the first three Texas hitters.

Then Archer started piling up the strikeouts. The hard-throwing right-hander got into such a groove that he didn’t realize he struck out six Rangers in a row at one point in the Rays’ 10-1 victory Wednesday night.

“It’s just one of those situations where you get in the zone and you black out,” Archer said. “Your hard work and practice takes over.”

Archer (8-6) had a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings and Matt Joyce hit the first of Tampa Bay’s three early home runs. After those two walks, Archer got out of the first when Alex Rios went down swinging to start the strikeout streak.

“When he struck out Rios, I felt a lot better,” manager Joe Maddon said. “That was the real deep slider that we’re used to seeing. I liked that.”

It was Archer’s third career game with at least 10 strikeouts, and two have come against the Rangers. He struck out 11 against Texas in a home game on Sept. 8, 2012, in his third career start.

After Joyce homered in the first, Sean Rodriguez and Brandon Guyer hit two-run shots in the second off righty Miles Mikolas (1-5).

“I think it was kind of nice to jump out in front with the big hit like that,” Joyce said. “The guys seemed to be aggressive with the ball in the zone and up in the zone. Just really driving the ball.”
