INCHEON (Yonhap) ― A North Korean delegation is scheduled to cross the border and arrive in Incheon to attend pre-Asian Games functions in the South Korean host city, officials said.

Organizers of the Incheon Asian Games said Yang Song-ho, president of the Korean University of Physical Education in Pyongyang, and seven other officials are scheduled to arrive at Incheon International Airport via Beijing.

North Korea last week submitted a list of 150 athletes in 14 of 36 sports at the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Asian Games, to be held in Incheon, a metropolitan city just west of Seoul.

North Korea also competed in the last Asiad held in South Korea, the 2002 event in Busan.

Yang is scheduled to attend an international conference in Incheon on sport’s role in improving relations among Asians, and to give a keynote speech, the organizers added.

They said about 300 scholars from the United States, Canada, China and Japan will also be on hand.

Yang’s delegation will then attend the draw for the Asian Games football tournament on Thursday, also in Incheon.

The draws for 18 sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball and badminton, will take place on that day, and the draw for football is scheduled to begin around noon, according to the organizers.

The North Koreans will then visit some Asian Games venues before returning home on Friday.
