LG Chem, the chemicals and battery unit of LG Group, said Wednesday that it has been named a top environment-friendly energy company by a consultative body of energy ministers from 23 countries.

The Clean Energy Ministerial, which discusses the development of clean energy sources and their wider adoption, will hold the awarding ceremony of its first Energy Management Leadership Award in San Francisco next month on the sideline of their seventh meeting.

The award aims to honor companies for their efforts to use less energy and improve energy efficiency at their workplaces. After more than 35 companies competed to win the honor, LG Chem’s plant in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province, was named one of the three winners together with Cummins of the U.S. and New Gold of Canada.

The Ochang plant has continued adopting diverse energy management systems in phases such as those using new renewable energy generation and energy reduction technologies.

The rooftop and some sites are covered with energy storage systems to use solar power, while waste heat from production facilities is collected and converted to electricity.

Thanks to these efforts, the plant could reduce 9.39 percent of energy consumption, worth 11.4 billion won ($10 million), for the year 2014, more than doubling the industry average of 3 to 4 percent.
