Samsung heir supports father’s pledge on change

LAS VEGAS ― Samsung Electronics’ heir apparent Lee Jae-yong on Friday strongly supported his father Lee Kun-hee’s drive for challenge and change.

“(Chairman Lee) is someone who is constantly mounts new challenges,” Lee said from Las Vegas where he was attending the Consumer Electronics Show, the largest electronics tradeshow in the world.

“Also, the chairman has DNA that makes it unbearable for him to be defeated, whether in personal affairs or his company matters.”

The senior Lee, back as chairman since last year after weathering a legal crisis, has recently reiterated the need for change and innovation despite Samsung’s latest stellar performance.

The company last year registered a record-high annual sales of 150 trillion won ($133.9 billion), driven by significant growth in semiconductor sales.

A time of success is when complacency can most easily kick in, which is why new strategies for generating growth and revenue in the next decade are necessary, according to the older Lee.

“The chairman’s message is to be on guard against complacency and to continue seeking out challenges and venturing forward,” his son said.

He added that he is “trying to learn” his father’s ways, not by imitating him, but by putting his own personal spin on it.

The 42-year-old was promoted to a president at the electronics firm last month, a move that many saw as signaling the elder Lee’s decision to put his son at the fore of leadership to gradually complete a transfer of power.

Along with Lee, his two sisters also received high-profile promotions last year, triggering forecasts that the next generation of the owner family was preparing to take Samsung’s helm.

Industry watchers have said that the younger Lee is careful not to put himself in the limelight when his father is still the top brass.

Reflecting such observations, he said “while many maybe anticipating a bigger role from me, my duties have not changed,” as he is still Chief Operating Officer.

“But I feel a bigger responsibility,” he said.

(라스베이거스=연합뉴스) 이재용 삼성전자 사장이 부친인 이건희 회장의 도전정신을 배우며 경영에 나서겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

지난 7일(현지시간) 미국 라스베이거스 '소비자 가전 전시회(CES)'에 참석해 기 자들과 약식 간담회를 가지면서다.

작년 12월 사장으로 승진한 뒤 대만 거래처와 만나는 등 대외활동을 이어왔으나, 해외 공개행사에서 모습을 드러낸 것은 이번이 처음이다.

이 사장은 이건희 회장에게 경영에 대해 주문을 받은 게 있느냐는 질문에 "회장님은 종합적이고 입체적으로 사물을 바라보는 시각과 도전정신을 갖고 있는 분"이라 고 운을 뗐다.

이어 "이런 시각과 도전정신을 똑같이 따라한다고 그대로 되는 것은 아니지만 나름대로 배우며 소화하려고 노력하고 있다"고 말했다.

그는 "작년 회사 실적이 좋은 편이었지만 자만하지 말고 계속 전진하자는 게 회 장님의 일관된 메시지"라고 전했다.

또 "회장님은 개인 일이든 회사 일이든 지고는 못 참는 DNA를 가진 분이며 도전 정신은 전 세계에서 따라잡을 사람이 없다"며 "천하의 최지성 부회장께서도 회장님을 무서워하는 이유"라고 언급하기도 했다.

이 사장은 승진 소감에 대해 "최고운영책임자(COO)로서 역할이 변한 게 없는 데 주위에서 기대가 커진 것 같다"며 "그래서 더욱 책임감이 무겁다"고 답했다.

이 사장은 이날 오후 CES 2011 행사장에 도착해 3시간가량 소니와 파나소닉, 모 토로라, 도시바, LG전자 등 경쟁사 부스를 찾으면서 전자업계의 기술 동향을 점검했다.

특히 입체영상(3D) TV와 차세대 통신망(4G)용 휴대전화, 태블릿PC, 디지털 카메라 등 첨단기술이 적용된 제품에 관심을 보였다.

각 부스에서 3D TV용 안경을 직접 써 보는 등 경쟁사 제품의 성능을 자세히 살펴보기도 했다.

이 사장이 CES 행사장을 둘러보는 동안 최지성 대표이사 부회장과 윤부근 영상 디스플레이사업부 사장, 신종균 무선사업부 사장 등 삼성전자 경영진이 동행했다.

전날 이 사장은 베스트바이 등 미국 유력 유통업체와 4대 통신사 등 거래 업체들 을 만나며 사업 방향에 대해 논의한 것으로 전해졌다.

지난 4일 라스베이거스에 도착해 여러 일정을 소화한 그는 이날 오후 한국으로 돌아갔다.
