The Chung Trio, consisting of siblings Chung Myung-whun on the piano, violinist Chung Kyung-wha and cellist Chung Myung-wha, will hold a concert in December in memory of their late mother Lee Won-sook, CMI Korea said.

Myung-whun has repeatedly said in press conferences this year that he would push for a tribute concert for his mother who died in May at the age of 93.

The trio will hold the concert on Dec. 13 at the Grand Hall of Ewha Womans University in the morning and Onnuri Church in Seobinggo-dong in the afternoon.

“The concert will be open only to their acquaintances. The time and the program have not been decided yet,” a CMI Korea spokesperson said.

It is the first time the trio is playing together in seven years. Seven years ago, the Chung Trio held a five-city tour in Korea to celebrate Lee’s 86th birthday.

Lee was known for her trust- and encouragement-based education of her seven children. Thanks to her passion for music education which made her bring the piano with the family to Busan where they sought refuge during the Korean War, the three have become world-renowned musicians.

The eldest Myung-so, who died in 2007, was a flutist, the second-oldest Myung-geun is a businessman, the fourth Myung-chul, who died in 1999, was a professor and the youngest Myung-gyu is a doctor.

Meanwhile, Chung Myung-whun, music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, is pushing for an inter-Korean joint orchestra, consisting of musicians from South Korea and North Korea, to hold a concert either in Seoul and/or in Pyongyang late this year.

Chung said he will also run a program to nurture young and talented musicians in the North.
