Kangwon Land, Korea’s only legal casino for domestic citizens, announced a plan to adopt lower stakes games to deal with gambling addiction.

Just this year, the Korean Casino lowered the bottom limit of gaming on some of its machines from 500 won (about 50 cents) to 100 won.

As Kangwon Land continues to reduce the stakes, 88 percent of their machines allow gamers to play with just 10 won.

An official told reports “The reasons for adopting such slot machines were to provide customers with wider range of choice, while creating sound gambling culture via preventing excessive betting.”

The member-only gaming room took 17 percent of revenue in the first quarter this year, compared to 30 percent in 2003, hinting at the popularit yof the machines.

Members are allowed to make higher bets in the member’s room.

There are 17 casinos in Korea, but gambling is legal only for foreign passport holders in 16 of them. Kangwon Land was given special status in order to revitalize the regional economy.

But local residents are not allowed to enter the casino. With strong regulation against gambling in Korea, gamblers can also be barred from entry upon the request of their family.

강원랜드는 올해 모두 4회에 걸쳐 슬롯머신 80대 최소배팅금액을 500원에서 100원으로 내렸다.

이에 따라 일반영업장의 최소배팅금액이 500원인 슬롯머신은 애초 480대에서 116대로 줄어든 반면, 최소배팅금액이 10원, 50원, 100원인 슬롯머신은 전체의 88%인 844대로 늘어났다.

강원랜드 머신영업팀 정병선 팀장은 “소액권 슬롯머신을 신설, 확대한 것은 고객 선택의 폭을 다양화하는 한편, 과도한 베팅을 방지해 성숙한 게임문화를 조성하려는 것”이라고 말했다.

한편, 강원랜드는 지속적인 카지노 건전화방안 추진 영향으로 고액 베팅을 하는 회원영업장 매출이 2003년 개장 당시 전체 매출의 30%를 넘던 회원영업장 매출이 올 1분기에는 17%로 낮아졌다고 설명했다.
