Apple not to outdo Samsung in Q4 smartphone sales: report

Apple Inc. may find it difficult to overtake Samsung Electronics Co. as the top global smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of this year, a market report showed Sunday.

Samsung, the world's No. 2 handset maker, dethroned Apple in the third quarter in smartphone shipments, becoming the top smartphone vendor in the world. Samsung is estimated to have shipped 27.3 million units of smartphones in the July-September period.

According to the report by Strategy Analytics of the U.S., Apple's smartphone shipments will likely rebound tremendously in the October-December period but that will not be enough to help it surpass Samsung.

Apple's sluggish third-quarter sales resulted from a delay in the production and sale of its iPhone 4S, it said.

The iPhone 4S, originally set to go on sale in September, hit the market on Oct. 14 in seven countries. The iPhone 4S was one of the last products created during the lifetime of Apple founder Steve Jobs, who died on Oct. 5.

In addition, smartphone users are opting for handsets built on Google Inc.'s Android system because of their bigger screen size, fourth-generation technology and diverse features, Strategy Analytics said.

Meanwhile, the report said smartphone sales by South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. skyrocketed 300 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, far outperforming the overall market growth rate of

48 percent. Samsung trailed with a 275 percent surge, followed by HTC Corp. with 94 percent.

The report estimated that 120 million units of smartphones had been sold in the third quarter of this year, representing over 30 percent of the global mobile phone market.

3·4분기에 스마트폰 판매량 1위 자리를 삼성전 자에 내준 애플이 4·4분기 이후 판매량이 반등세로 돌아서더라도 삼성을 다시 제압하기는 어려울 것이라는 분석이 나왔다.

13일 업계에 따르면 미국의 글로벌 시장조사기관인 SA(Strategy Analytics)는 최근 발간한 스마트폰 보고서에서 "애플의 판매량이 엄청난 수준으로(tremendously) 반등하겠지만, 삼성을 따라잡기는 충분하지 않을 것"이라고 내다봤다.

보고서는 3분기에 애플 판매량이 저조했던 원인과 관련 "8월에 생산돼 9월에 판 매하기로 계획됐던 '아이폰4S'의 생산과 판매 지연이 문제"라고 분석했다.

또 스마트폰 사용자는 화면 크기와 4세대(4G) 이동통신 기술, 그리고 다양한 스 마트폰 구성 때문에 안드로이드 쪽으로 몰려들고 있으며, 전 세계 안드로이드 스마 트폰 중 38%가 삼성의 상표를 달고 있다며 애플의 장래를 어둡게 전망했다.

보고서는 다만 "아이폰4S는 유럽이동통신(GSM)과 코드분할다중접속(CDMA) 등 양 대 3세대(3G) 이동통신을 모두 지원하는 '월드폰'"이라며 "따라서 애플은 아시아에 서 새로운 문을 열게 될 것"이라고 예상했다.

한편, 보고서는 LG전자의 스마트폰 판매량이 급성장, 작년 동기 대비 3 00%의 성장률을 기록했다고 밝혔다.

이는 전체 스마트폰 시장 성장률인 48%를 크게 웃도는 것으로 스마트폰 제조사 가운데 가장 높은 수치다. 삼성전자(275%)와 HTC(94%)가 그 뒤를 이었다.

SA는 LG전자에 대해 "덕분에 버라이즌과 같은 메이저 통신사와의 관계가 빠른 회복 지점을 넘어섰다"고 평가했다.

이어 "(3D 스마트폰인) '옵티머스 3D'가 4분기 실적을 견인할 것"이라고 내다봤 다.

3분기 전세계 스마트폰 판매량은 1억2천만대 수준인데, 이는 전체 휴대전화 시 장의 30% 이상이다.

그러나 스마트폰 시장의 연간 성장률은 48%로 지난해 3분기 이후 처음으로 70% 아래로 떨어졌다.

보고서는 이에 대해 "스마트폰은 이제 기하급수적으로 증가하는 단계를 지났으 며 '틈새시장'이 아니다"라고 평가했다.

이어 "스마트폰 경쟁이 치열해 제품 포트폴리오에서 하나가 늦어지거나 부족하면 수백만 대의 판매 손실을 볼 수 있다"고 지적했다.
