Goyang Aramnuri, one of Korea’s biggest arts complexes, plans to feature Beethoven and Brahms symphonies this year as part of its seven-year project designed to explore works of 14 great musicians.

Kicking off this year’s program, the Korean Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Choi Hee-joon will perform Beethoven’s Egmont Overture Op. 84 and Symphony No. 8 in F Major Op. 93 at the center’s Hayden Hall on May 25. The orchestra will also perform Brahm’s Concerto for Violin and Cello in A Minor Op. 102 in collaboration with cellist Song Young-hoon and violinist Bae Joo-young during the concert.

The series continues on July 21 with the Tongyeong International Music Festival Ensemble led by conductor Choi Soo-yeol and will end on Dec. 14 with Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra playing under pianist-turned-conductor Kim Dae-jin.

On July 21, the TIMF ensemble will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61 with violinist Kim Jae-young while Suwon Phil collaborates with pianist Lee Jin-sang on Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1 in D Minor Op. 15.

The art center, located just north of Seoul, kicked off the first part of the grand project last year by staging symphonic compositions by Hayden and Mozart in the 18th century, to offer a deeper understanding of classical music. It plans to stage works of Schubert and Mendelssohn next year, followed by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff in 2014, Dvorak and Sibelius in 2015, Bruckner and Mahler in 2016, and Prokofiev and Shostakovich in 2017.
