South Korea on Friday lauded the summit agreement between the US and Chinese leaders to work closely together to convince North Korea to curb its nuclear program.

"We assess that they were relatively successful talks that laid the groundwork for cooperation between the two leaders and the development of the US-China relationship," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, referring to the talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

In the talks held in Florida on Friday, Trump and Xi shared the urgency of the threat of North Korea's weapons program, reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula and committed to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions.

"They agreed to increase cooperation and work with the international community to convince the DPRK to peacefully resolve the issue and abandon its illicit weapons programs," US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said of the talks' results.

"The summit was meaningful in that the North Korean nuclear issue and the South Korea-US alliance issue, which are related to our core interests, were discussed as important agenda items in an extensive and comprehensive manner as a result of close collaboration between Seoul and Washington," the ministry said in a press release.

South Korea will enhance its policy coordination with the US in a way that the latest US-China talks could bear progress in the North Korean nuclear issue, the ministry noted.

The ministry separately said Sunday that China's special representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei will visit South Korea this week to discuss the North Korean nuke issue in light of the recent US-China summit.

After arriving in Seoul on Monday, the Chinese envoy in charge of the North Korean issue will talk with South Korea's representative Kim Hong-kyun, according to the ministry.

During the visit which is expected to last till Thursday or Friday, Wu will also reportedly meet with presidential candidates here in a bid to win them over to China's emphasis on talks as the resolution of the North Korean issue. He could allegedly also repeat China's opposition to the on-going deployment of the US air defense system, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, in South Korea. (Yonhap)
