지난 회에 이어, 유용한 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.

A: I’ve enjoyed talking over the phone with you but where should we go from here?

B: We should get together and hammer out the details of our new business plan.

A: 전화상으로 논의한 것은 유익했습니다만 앞으로 어떻게 진행해야 하나요?

B: 직접 만나서 우리의 새 사업 계획에 대한 세부 사항을 결정해야 합니다.

SITUATION 힘들게 합의사항을 도출할 때

평범하게 Let’s figure out the main points first and determine the details later.

영어답게 Let’s figure out the main points first and hammer out the details later.

오랜 노력 끝에 협상안을 내거나 합의사항을 도출하는 경우, 대장간에서 오랜 망치질 끝에 도구를 만드는 것에 비유하여 hammer out이라는 말을 쓸 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, ‘일단 큰 합의부터 하고 세세한 부분은 나중에 논의하자’는 다음과 같이 말할 수 있죠. Let’s figure out the main points and then hammer out the details later.

A: Our competitors asked if we would like to partner up against the number one company.

B: That sounds like a good idea, but they may turn on us as soon as they don’t need us anymore.

A: 같이 힘을 합쳐 1위 기업에 대응할 생각이 있는지 경쟁사들이 묻던데요.

B: 좋은 생각처럼 들리지만, 우리가 더 이상 필요하지 않을 때는 언제든 등을 돌릴 수도 있는 회사들이야.

SITUATION 파트너로서 함께 일할 때

평범하게 We work together with other software companies to finish our projects on time.

영어답게 We partner up with other software companies to finish our projects on time.

up을 붙여서 의미를 더 강조하는 구동사(phrasal verb)를 만드는 경우가 많죠. partner나 team과 같은 명사에 up을 붙여 team up, partner up이라고 하면 협력하여 일하는 것을 나타내는 표현이 됩니다.

We are proud to be affiliated with so many prestigious companies.

저희 회사는 많은 유명 기업과 제휴하고 있는 것을 자랑스럽게 생각합니다.

SITUATION ‘제휴 관계’를 표현할 때

평범하게 We are no longer connected with that company.

영어답게 We are no longer affiliated with that company.affiliate는 ‘제휴’나 ‘소속’을 뜻하는

말로, 대기업의 계열사를 affiliated company라고 표현합니다. 또 정당에 소속된 상태를 party affiliation이라고 하죠. 대통령이 탈당하여 소속 정당이 없는 상태라면 The President is now without party affiliation.이라고 말할 수 있습니다.

A: If you don’t follow through on our agreement, then I’m going to sue you.

B: A handshake agreement will never hold up in court so you can’t argue that I should pay you double for finishing the work early.

A: 귀측이 합의 사항을 이행하지 않으면 고소하겠습니다.

B: 임시로 합의한 것은 법적인 효력이 없으므로, 일을 일찍 끝마쳤으니 2배의 금액을 지불하라는 주장은 하실 수 없습니다.

SITUATION 임시적으로 합의했을 때

평범하게 The chairman agreed and shook hands with a potential buyer.

영어답게 The chairman had a handshake agreement with a potential buyer.

agreement 앞에 형용사를 붙여 어느 정도 구속력을 지닌 합의인지를 표현할 수 있습니다. written agreement는 문서로 합의했다는 뜻이고, verbal agreement는 말로만 합의했다는 뜻이죠. handshake agreement라고 하면 서로 악수를 하며 합의했다는 의미로, 구속력이 있는 완전한 합의에는 이르지 않은 상태를 나타냅니다.

〈권한침해, 갈등〉

A: I’m sorry if I’ve been stepping on your toes lately. I didn’t realize you took care of sales in this district.

B: It’s alright. I know that you’re new and still learning the ropes. I just don’t want my customers to be confused with another salesman approaching them from the same company.

A: 최근에 당신의 권한을 침해한 일이 있다면 사과합니다. 당신이 이 지역의 세일즈를 담당하고 있는 것을 몰랐습니다.

B: 괜찮습니다. 새로 와서 아직 일을 배우고 있다고 들었습니다. 다만, 같은 회사 내의 다른 사람이 영업하는 것 때문에 고객들이 혼동하지 않기를 바랄 뿐입니다.

SITUATION 타인의 권한을 침해할 때

평범하게 We need to stop interfering with each other.

영어답게 We need to stop stepping on each other’s toes.

타인의 영역을 침해한다고 할 때 infringe on이나 impinge on 같은 표현을 쓰죠. 좀 더 구어적으로는 ‘다른 사람의 발을 밟는다’는 뜻으로 step on one’s toes처럼 말할 수도 있습니다.
