South Korea will continue its support of the global fight against terrorism, a top diplomat said Monday, describing the weekend attacks on France as an "atrocious incident."

"We strongly condemn these brutal acts of terrorism and extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families of the victims and the people of France," Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam said.

He was delivering a speech at the 39th Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies Executive Board Meeting under way in Seoul.

Lim reaffirmed Seoul's commitment to backing the international community's efforts to "eradicate terrorism."

On North Korea, he urged the country to implement all inter-Korean agreements in a faithful manner for mutual trust.

After high-level talks in August, the two Koreas agreed to hold more government-level meetings.

"In this regard, what counts most is North Korea's sincerity and determination to act on its words," Lim said.

He asked OANA members to join in the South's efforts to "shed more light upon the northern half of the Korean Peninsula so that the peaceful reunification of the peninsula can be achieved sooner rather than later."

OANA was launched in 1961 as a major network of regional news agencies. Its members consist of 43 news agencies from 35 countries, including South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

Lim noted the role of the organization.

"OANA has continued to make contributions in promoting the direct and free exchange of information between news agencies in the Asia-Pacific," he pointed out. (Yonhap)
