이번 주부터는 시사적인 내용을 말할 때 도움이 될 영어다운 표현들을 보겠습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 시사이슈 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.    

<경제>

A: There are fears that climbing household debt might spark another financial crisis.

B: I hope it doesn’t happen, but if the interest rate increases, debtors will be more squeezed to sell their houses.

A: 증가하는 가계빚이 또 다른 금융 위기를 촉발할 거라는 두려움이 있어.

B: 그런 일이 없기를 바라지만, 금리가 오른다면 채무자들은 집을 팔아야 하는 압박에 더 시달리게 될 거야.

SITUATION 금융위기를 촉발한다고 할 때

평범하게 Climbing household debt might cause another financial crisis.

영어답게 Climbing household debt might spark another financial crisis.

어떤 일을 일으킨다고 할 때 활용하는 기본 동사는 cause입니다. 대신 방아쇠를 당기듯 촉발한다는 의미에서 trigger를 활용할 수도 있고, 위기의 발생을 폭발에 비유하여 불꽃을 일으킨다는 뜻으로 spark라고 할 수도 있죠. Rising household debt could become a flashpoint for another financial crisis.라고 말할 수도 있는데, flashpoint는 불이 붙는 '인화점', 비유적으로 중대한 문제가 발생하는 시점을 가리킵니다.

<정치, 외교>

A: We should now be able to stand on our own rather than turn to the U.S. for national security.

B: Yeah, you’re right. The thing is North Korea’s military threat is too strong for South Korea alone to deal with.

A: 우리의 안보를 미국에 의존하기보다 스스로 자립할 수 있어야 해.

B: 맞아. 그런데 문제는 북한의 군사 위협이 한국 스스로 대응하기에는 너무 강하다는 점이지.

SITUATION 스스로 결정해야 한다고 할 때

평범하게 We should become independent rather than turn to the U.S. for national security.

영어답게 We should stand on our own rather than turn to the U.S. for national security.

stand on our own (two feet)는 ‘스스로 (두 발로) 일어선다’라는 뜻이죠. 스스로 결정하고 자립한다고 할 때 쓰는 표현입니다. 미국에 의존하지 않고 안보를 스스로 결정한다고 할 때 활용할 수 있습니다.

A: There still needs to be a stronger government commitment to make sure foreign residents are equally represented and heard.

B: Many expats say they don’t have channels through which to voice opinions about their lives in Korea.

A: 한국에 거주하는 외국인들의 견해도 동등하게 듣고 반영될 수 있게 정부가 더 노력할 필요가 있어.

B: 많은 외국인들이 한국에서의 생활에 대해 의견을 표명할 수 있는 채널이 없다고 말하잖아.

SITUATION 의견이 반영된다고 할 때

평범하게 Opinions of foreign residents should be accepted.

영어답게 Foreign residents should be equally represented and heard.

hear는 듣는다는 뜻을 넘어 의견을 청취한다는 의미도 지닙니다. Their voices are not being heard.라고 하면 ‘그들의 의견이 반영되지 않는다’는 말입니다. represent도 비슷한 의미인데요, 정치적으로 어떤 사람이나 집단의 목소리가 반영되지 않고 대표하는 정치 세력이 없을 때 They are not represented.처럼 말할 수 있습니다. 너무 조금 반영된다는 의미로 They are under-represented.처럼 표현할 수도 있죠.

B: Perpetrators of such horrible crimes should be severely punished.

A: 아동 학대야말로 우리가 알게 되는 가장 끔찍한 범죄 중 하나야.

B: 그런 끔찍한 범죄를 저지르는 사람들은 엄격히 처벌을 받아야 해.

SITUATION 끔찍한 범죄라고 말할 때

평범하게 Child molestation is one of the worst crimes we hear about.

영어답게 Child molestation is one of the most heinous crimes we hear about.

범죄의 끔찍함을 강조하는 형용사로 horrible 이외에 heinous도 잘 활용됩니다. unspeakable crime이라고 해도 말할 수 없을 정도로 사악한 범죄라는 의미가 되죠.

<문화, 과학>

A: Terminally and chronically ill patients will be the main beneficiaries of advancing biotechnologies.

B: I hope those benefits are not dominated by the rich and powerful.

A: 말기 환자와 만성 질환 환자들이 생명공학기술 발전의 주요 수혜자들이 될거야.

B: 그런 혜택이 돈과 권력을 가진 사람들에 의해 독점되지 않기를 바라.

SITUATION 말기 환자를 말할 때

평범하게 Patients with incurable diseases will be the main beneficiaries of biotechnologies.

영어답게 Terminally ill patients will be the main beneficiaries of biotechnologies.

terminal은 원래 최종적이라는 뜻입니다. 우리에게 익숙한 단어 ‘터미널’도 여행지의 최종 목적지라는 의미에서 나왔죠. 그래서 terminally ill은 치료가 불가능해 죽음에 이를 수밖에 없는 환자를 일컫는 말이 됩니다. 생명공학 기술이 말기 환자들에게 새로운 기회를 제공할 것이라고 할 때, terminally ill patients라는 표현이 등장합니다.
