Contrary to popular belief that men outperform women in math and science, a new study claims that both genders tend to show similar achievement, while Asian-Americans are the highest achievers among ethnic groups in the U.S.

The study, to be released in the Psychology of Women Quarterly, was conducted on 367 male and female 10th graders, consisting of African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans. The results revealed that male and female students showed similar performances in math and science, while Asian-American males received the highest scores and Hispanic- and African-Americans the lowest.

The researchers also analyzed the perceptions of one’s own ability, task value, and expectation of success, which are deemed important indicators in predicting a student’s achievement in a certain subject. Male students had strong confidence in the ability to solve math problems or in expectation of future success, while female students put greater task value on science than male while relatively lacking confidence in both subjects.

According to professor Nicole Else-Quest, a lead author and developmental psychologist at the University of Maryland, attitudes toward their own capabilities could be decisive factors in persevering or choosing careers in related academic fields.

“We need to expand our approach to this issue and study affective variables such as anxiety, boredom or apathy given prior findings of the importance of these emotions in academic achievement contexts,” said Else-Quest.

여학생 수학, 과학실력 남학생과 비교해 보니...


여학생들도 수학과 과학 과목에서 남학생들과 비슷한 학업 성취도를 보인다는 연구결과가 나왔다.

숫자와 관련 된 이공계 과목에서는 남학생들이 더 우월할 것이라는 편견과 달리 ‘계간 여성심리학 (Psychology of Women Quarterly)저널에 곧 기재될 연구에 의하면, 여학생들도 남학생들과 비슷한 수학과 과학성적을 받는다고 한다. 그 와중에 아시안계 미국인은 남녀불문하고 가장 월등한 성적을 받았다고 한다.

연구진들은 367명의 백인, 아프리카계 미국인, 라틴계, 그리고 아시안계 미국인으로 구성 된 10학년 (고등학교 1학년) 학생들을 대상으로 과학과 수학과목에서의 성취도를 비교했다. 연구 결과, 성별에 따른 차이점은 없었으나 아시안계 미국인들의 성적이 가장 좋았으며, 라틴계열 학생들이 가장 열등한 성적을 받았다.

이 밖에도 연구진들은 학생들의 학업성취도를 예측할 수 있는 능력자각도, 과업 가치도, 그리고 성공기대감등을 분석하였으며, 인종과 상관없이 남학생들은 수학에 대한 자신감이 크고 성공에 대한 기대도 컸던 반면, 여학생들은 수학과 과학 과목에 대한 자신감은 낮으나 남학생들보다 과학과목을 더 중요시하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

메릴랜드 주립 대학의 교수이자 발달심리학자 Nicole Else-Quest는 “과목에 대한 태도는 장기적인 학업성취도와 관련 직업에 종사할 때 중요한 요소로 작용하며, 불안함, 지루함과 같은 감정과의 연관성도 연구할 예정이다”라고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)
