A 1950s memo about UFOs is the most viewed public record in the history of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to the agency’s website.

The FBI on Monday uploaded a post about the so-called Hottel memo, a single-page report documented on March 22, 1950, by Guy Hottel, then head of FBI’s field office in Washington. It has been viewed nearly 1 million times since April 2011, when the bureau uploaded its public records.

The Hottel memo relayed a story told to FBI agents about “flying saucers” found in New Mexico. The unidentified informant in the document described saucers as “circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter.”

The memo also stated each saucer was occupied by “three bodies of human shape” that were 3 feet tall. The bodies were donned with suits similar to speed fliers and test pilots.

The alleged discovery was never officially investigated by the FBI.

After the Hottel memo was uploaded on the Internet two years ago, there was buzz among UFO believers who believed that the document was proof of the famous 1947 Roswell UFO incident.

Some believe that an alien aircraft had crashed in the town of Roswell, New Mexico, on July 2, 1947, and the U.S. government covered up the incident.

The FBI, however, denied that the Hottel memo was evidence of alien existence. It said that the memo had been created three years after Roswell event and that there is no connection between Hottel’s records and Roswell.

The agency added that its then-director John Edgar Hoover had, in fact, ordered his agents to verify UFO sightings, but the investigation had folded after four months. This suggests “our Washington Field Office didn’t think enough of that flying saucer story to look into it,” it said.

“Sorry, no smoking gun on UFOs. The mystery remains,” the post said.

하텔 메모에는 신원이 공개되지 않은 한 정보원이 FBI요원에게 ‘비행접시’에 대해 증언한 내용이 담겨 있는데, 이 내용에 따르면 해당 비행 접시는 “둥근 모양에 중간이 볼록 튀어나와 있으며 지름이 약 15미터 정도”라고 한다.

또한 비행접시가 여러 개 발견되었으며, 접시마다 각각 ‘인간형태의 시신’ 세 구가 들어있었다고 하는데, 시신들의 키는 약 90cm 정도였으며 테스트 파일럿이나 고속 비행사 (speed flier) 들과 유사한 옷을 입고 있었다고 한다.

하텔 메모는 당시 FBI국장이었던 존 에드거 후버 앞으로 작성되었으나, 실제로 이 메모의 내용에 따라 조사가 이뤄진 적은 없다.

2년 전 하텔 메모가 인터넷에 공개되자, 수많은 UFO신봉자들 및 언론은 “로스웰 사건의 증거가 나타났다”며 관심을 보였다. 로스웰 사건이란 UFO신봉자들이 믿는 외계우주선 추락사건으로, 이들에 따르면 1947년 7월 2일 뉴멕시코 주 로스웰에 외계인이 탄 비행물체가 추락했으며 미국 정부가 사건과 관련된 기록들을 은폐했다고 한다.

그러나 FBI는 이번 블로그 글에서 하텔 메모는 로스웰 사건 3년 후에 작성된 것이라 전혀 관련이 없으며, 이 메모가 외계인의 존재를 나타내는 증거물이 될 수도 없다고 강조했다.

또한 FBI는 당시 후버 국장이 실제로 UFO관련 조사를 지시했으나 고작 4개월만에 막을 내렸다면서, “이를 보면 워싱턴 지부가 비행접시가 조사할 만한 가치가 없다고 생각했다는 것을 알 수 있다”라고 설명했다.
