지난 회에 이어, 특히 프레젠테이션 자료를 만들 때 도움이 될 비즈니스 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.

SITUATION 시너지 효과가 있을 때

평범하게 Large corporations are able to create synergies with their subsidiary companies.

영어답게 Large corporations are able to synergize with their subsidiary companies.

상승효과라는 의미의 ‘시너지’는 이제 익숙한 외래어가 되었죠. energy의 동사형이 energize이듯이‘시너지 효과를 낸다’는 synergy의 동사형인 synergize로 나타낼 수 있습니다.

A: What’s our contingency plan?

B: If we are unable to recruit enough students to volunteer, we will offer cash incentives for participation.

A: 만일의 사태에 대비하는 계획은 뭐지?

B: 지원자를 충분히 모집하지 못하면 참여하는 학생들에게 현금으로 인센티브를 부여할 예정입니다.

SITUATION 만일의 사태에 대비한다고 할 때

평범하게 We need to check if there is a plan in case of an emergency.

영어답게 We need to check if there is a contingency plan.

contingency는 우발적으로 일어나는 사태, 만일의 사태를 의미하는 단어이고, contingency plan은 contingency에 대한 대비책을 일컫습니다. ‘첫 번째 대책이 통하지 않을 때의 보완책’을 뜻하는 back-up plan이나 ‘두 번째 방안’이라는 뜻의 plan B도 비슷한 의미로 쓰는 표현이죠.

A: I’ve asked our project team about the feasibility of going to market this upcoming holiday season, and they seemed optimistic.

B: Good. That means we’ll be able to show a high sales volume for the 4th financial quarter.

A: 이번 연말에 시장 출시가 가능할지 프로젝트 팀에 물었는데 낙관적이던데.

B: 잘됐네. 4분기에는 판매량이 많이 늘어난다는 소리겠구만.

SITUATION 사업의 ‘실현 가능성’을 표현할 때

평범하게 Is it possible to go to market next month?

영어답게 What’s the feasibility of going to market next month?

어떤 일이 실행 가능하다고 할 때 viable, workable, feasible 등을 유용하게 쓸 수 있습니다. 명사형인 feasibility는 사업을 실행할 수 있는 가능성을 의미하죠. feasible은 금전적으로 감당할 수 있는지를 표현하기도 하므로, 예를 들어 financially feasible이라고 하면 ‘자금조달이 가능하여 실현할 수 있다’, fiscally feasible이라고 하면 ‘정부가 재정적으로 감당할 수 있다’라는 의미가 됩니다. 따라서 Our engineers did an analysis of the project and found that it was financially feasible to proceed.는 ‘우리 기술자들이 프로젝트를 분석해서 재무적으로 진행 가능하다는 결론을 냈습니다’라는 뜻이 됩니다.

성공하려면 강력하면서도 실현 가능한 사업 계획을 세워야 해.

SITUATION ‘실현 가능성’을 표현할 때

평범하게 Relocating the company is not a possible option.

영어답게 Relocating the company is not a viable option.

viable은 ‘경쟁하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 vie에서 나온 말입니다. ‘경쟁에서 살아남을 수 있는’이 기본 뜻이며 ‘실행 가능한’, ‘성공적인’이라는 의미도 지니죠. 기업이 계획을 실행하며 잘 해 나가는 상태를 표현하기에 적합한 단어입니다.

We’re finally hitting our profit milestone. If we continue like this, we’ll be on track to hit a million dollars in profit this year.

이익이 마침내 중간 목표치에 도달했습니다. 이대로만 간다면 올해 이익이 백만 달러에 도달할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

SITUATION 중요한 목표에 도달한 경우

평범하게 We’re finally reaching our profit target.

영어답게 We’re finally hitting our profit milestone.

원래 milestone은 목적지가 몇 마일 남았는지 적어 놓는 돌을 의미합니다. 중요한 기점마다 milestone을 두기 때문에, 큰 목표를 달성하는 과정의 의미 있는 작은 목표를 비유적으로 설명하는 단어가 되었습니다.

SITUATION ‘전망치’를 말할 때

평범하게 The information in the document is mostly forecasted.

영어답게 The information in the document is mostly forward-looking.

보통 기업에서 전망치를 발표할 때, 예상값이니 실제와 다를 수 있다는 뜻으로 disclaimer를 넣죠.  이 disclaimer를 forward-looking statement라고 합니다. forward-looking은 앞을 바라본다는 뜻으로, 어떤 수치가 전망치라고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다.
