<부정부패>

A: 기업이 주는 돈을 은밀하게 받는 정치인들은 청렴함에 대한 개념이 조금도 없어.

B: 기업은 영향력 있는 정치인과 결탁하려 한다고. 새로울 게 없어.

SITUATION 은밀하게 뇌물을 받는다고 할 때

평범하게 Politicians take corporate payouts secretly.

영어답게 Politicians take corporate payouts under the table.

은밀하게 이루어지는 거래나 뇌물수수를 표현할 때 under the table이 유용합니다. 테이블 밑으로 눈에 띄지 않게 뭔가를 주고받는 모양을 연상하면 이해가 쉽죠. 달리 behind closed doors라고 할 수도 있는데요, 다른 사람이 볼 수 없도록 밀실에서 문을 닫고 거래하는 모습을 나타내는 말이죠. ‘비밀스럽게’라는 뜻으로 in secrecy처럼 표현해도 좋습니다.

<정치, 외교>

B: There is no eternal friend or foe in the world of diplomacy. We act in the best interest of our own nations.

A: 중국은 한국 전쟁 때 우리의 적이었는데, 이제 가장 중요한 비즈니스 파트너가 되었어.

B: 외교의 세계에서 영원한 적도 동지도 없어. 모두 자국의 이익을 위해 행동할 뿐이야 .

SITUATION 영원한 적도 동지도 없다고 할 때

평범하게 There is no eternal friend or enemy in the world of diplomacy.

영어답게 There is no eternal friend or foe in the world of diplomacy.

적도 동지도 없다는 말을 영어로는 각각 foe와 friend를 활용하여 There is no eternal friend or foe.처럼 표현합니다. 적은 enemy라고 할 수도 있지만 friend와 같이 활용될 때는 f로 시작하는 foe를 활용하여 friend or foe라고 말하는 경우가 많습니다.

<사회>

A: There’s a report that the number of children addicted to smartphones is on the rise.

B: The thing is, these devices will inevitably become even more integrated into our daily lives. We should teach kids how to use them wisely rather than take them away.

A: 스마트폰에 중독된 아이들의 수가 증가하고 있다는 보고가 있어.

B: 문제는 스마트폰이 더욱 우리 삶의 일부가 될 수밖에 없다는 점이야. 아이들에게서 스마트폰을 빼앗으려 하지 말고 어떻게 현명하게 사용할지를 가르쳐야 해.

SITUATION 우리 삶의 일부분이 된다고 할 때

평범하게 Smartphones become an important part of our daily lives.

영어답게 Smartphones become even more integrated into our daily lives.

앞서 탈북자 문제를 말하면서 한국사회의 일부가 된다고 할 때 integrate를 활용했는데요, 스마트폰이 우리 삶의 중요한 부분이 되는 것도 integrate라고 표현할 수 있습니다. 서로 다른 둘 이상을 잘 어울리도록 섞거나 합한다고 할 때 유용한 단어입니다.

A: The best way to protect our children from smartphone addiction is to set an example and teach them how to practice moderation.

B: That’s why the parents’ role is important. We should cut down on the hours we spend on our own devices first.

A: 우리 아이들을 스마트폰 중독에서 보호하는 가장 좋은 방법은 우리가 모범이 되어서 어떻게 과도하지 않게 스마트폰을 쓸지 가르치는 거야.

B: 그래서 부모의 역할이 중요해. 우리 먼저 스마트폰 쓰는 시간을 줄여야 해.

SITUATION 스마트폰을 과도하지 않게 활용한다고 할 때

평범하게 We should teach our children how to use smartphones reasonably.

영어답게 We should teach our children how to practice moderation.

moderation은 ‘중용’을 의미합니다. 극단에 치우치지 않고 균형을 잡는 모습을 가리키죠. ‘절제’나 ‘적당함’으로 옮길 수도 있습니다. practice moderation은 ‘중용을 실천하다’, ‘과도함을 절제한다’는 뜻입니다. 스마트폰의 과도한 사용을 피하고 적당히 활용한다고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다.

A: I don’t know how to stop my son from using his smartphone.

B: It’s very hard for a child to develop self-restraint on his own. Why don’t you find something you can do together to divert his attention?

A: 아들 녀석이 스마트폰을 안 쓰게 만들 방법을 모르겠어.

B: 아이가 스스로 절제력을 기르는 것은 어려워. 주의를 분산시킬 수 있는 함께 할 일을 찾아보는 게 어때?

SITUATION 자기 절제력을 기른다고 할 때

평범하게 It’s hard for a child to decide when to stop using smartphone on his own.

영어답게 It’s hard for a child to develop self-restraint on his own.

restraint는 제한한다는 뜻을 지닌 restrain의 명사형입니다. self-restraint는 ‘스스로를 제한하는 것’, 즉 자기 절제력을 의미하죠. 동사 develop을 활용하여 develop self-restraint라고 하면 자기 절제력을 기르거나 발휘한다는 말이 됩니다. develop self-control이라고 해도 좋죠.
