NASA unveiled its new plan on Wednesday to capture an asteroid for astronauts to explore.

In 2019, a robotic spaceship will capture a 500-ton, 25-foot asteroid by unfolding a small section of the bag. The rock will be towed to a stable orbit near the moon through a thrust system generated by solar electric power.

“This mission represents an unprecedented technological feat that will lead to new scientific discoveries and technological capabilities and help protect our home planet,” NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a statement.

Donald Yeomans, who heads NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program, said searching for the right asteroid for the project would not be an easy task.

If the plan is implemented successfully, a manned Mars exploration mission is expected to accelerate.

나사, 소행성 포획 계획 발표

미 항공 우주국(NASA)이 10일(현지시간) 소행성을 포획해 우주 탐사에 이용하려는 계획을 추진 중이라고 밝혔다.

나사는 로봇 우주선이 거대한 주머니로 소행성을 포획해 태양광 추진 모듈을 이용해 원하는 방향으로 끌고 갈 것이라고 말했다.

우주선은 포획된 소행성을 탐사와 연구를 위해 달 근처에 재배치 할 것이다.

포획 대상은 지름 7.6m 무게 500톤의 비교적 작은 소행성이며, 나사 산하 지구근접물체 프로그램 연구소 도널드 예만스 소장은 적절한 소행성을 찾는 것이 꽤 어려운 일이 될 것이라고 밝혔다.

AP통신에 따르면, 계획이 성공할 경우 NASA의 유인 화성 탐사 계획 ‘오리온-SLS 프로젝트’ 일정이 약 4년 정도 앞당겨질 것으로 보인다. (코리아 헤럴드)
