South Korean stocks turned higher late Friday morning, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index gained 2.97 points, or 0.15 percent, to 2,039.62 as of 11:15 a.m.

The broad index followed overnight gains on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.30 percent, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index climbing 0.37 percent.

Foreigners and individuals are buying large-cap stocks, such as Samsung Electronics and Naver, the top Internet portal operator, giving a boost to the main index, said Kim Ye-eun, an analyst at LIG Investment & Securities.

Most large-cap stocks were mixed across the board.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics Co. gained 1.59 percent and No. 2 chipmaker SK hynix Inc. was up 0.99 percent.

Meanwhile, top automaker Hyundai Motor fell 1.41 percent and top life insurer Samsung Life was down 0.43 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,184.45 won against the U.S. dollar, down 5.95 won from the previous session's close. (Yonhap)
