LG Electronics said Tuesday that it hopes to lead global labor-management culture by emphasizing the social responsibility of labor unions.

As part of its efforts, a group of union leaders at the company’s Indonesian branch visited Korea for six days, company officials said.

Korea is a country where the labor-management relationship has long been hostile, sometimes resulting in physical conflicts.

The labor union for LG was the first to claim “union social responsibility” in 2010, with the goal of better serving consumers and the community.

This year, the company is seeking the global expansion of the union initiative, first inviting union members at its Indonesian operation.

In Korea, they are scheduled to look around LG’s factories nationwide and participate in social responsibility programs.

The LG union, together with the visiting workers, also plans to discuss and make a set of guidelines designed to be carried out in overseas workplaces.

As well as efforts to strengthen product quality, the guidelines will contain social responsibility measures such as activities related to CO2 emissions.

“We are leading an advanced labor-management relationship through diverse socially responsibly activities,” LG’s union head Bae Sang-ho said, adding that the union will step up efforts to spread the initiative abroad.
