Hyundai Motor Group provided dozens of green-energy transportation vehicles for the Yeosu Expo 2012 on Sunday.

The 51 eco-friendly vehicles include hydrogen fuel-cell operated Tucson ix and Mohave cars; electric-powered Ray EV and BlueOn vehicles; hydrogen fuel-cell buses, and compressed natural gas hybrid buses.

The green-energy transportation will mostly be used to carry Expo staff, performance groups and organizing committee members. Among these vehicles, 20 hydrogen fuel-cell operated and electricity-powered cars will be provided to developing countries to assist their administrative operations, the company said. Some of the green-energy vehicles will be offered to visitors for test-drive in the Energy Park.

Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen fuel-cell system generates electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air, without emission of carbon dioxide during the entire process.

A medium-sized sedan powered by hydrogen fuel-cell system can reduce about 410 tons of carbon dioxide emission, equivalent to the amount emitted in 2,500 round trips from Seoul to Busan, the company said.

The automotive group said it would use its hydrogen fuel-cell technology to generate electricity for the Korea Pavilion. The plan is the country’s first such application of hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the carmaker added.
