Apple Inc. is getting ready to launch an iPhone with a larger screen than its previous models, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The company has ordered screens measuring at least 4 inches diagonally from its Asian suppliers, the Journal reported Wednesday, calling its sources “people familiar with the situation.”

The sixth-generation iPhone would be the first in Apple‘s phone line to have a screen larger than 3.5 inches, and could be Apple’s response to other manufacturers‘ phones, which are going ever larger in screen sizes.

Some Android phones have already gone to 4.7-inch screens.

There have long been rumors of a larger-screen iPhone, but the Cupertino, Calif., company could be hesitant about increasing iPhone screen sizes to avoid one of Android’s biggest problems, that of fragmentation, the Los Angeles Times said.

Android phones from different carriers all have slightly different, “customized” version of the Android OS, which makes upgrades difficult and slow to reach consumers. Keeping every iPhone the same size helps Apple ensure most of its users are running the latest iOS version, which helps developers creating application of the Apple phone.

Production of a larger-screen iPhone is expected to begin next month, the Journal said.

4인치대 스크린은 이르면 내달 생산에 들어가 8월부터 아이폰에 탑재되는 공정이 시작될 것으로 보인다.

이 같은 애플의 ‘변심’에 대해 업계에서는 애플이 삼성전자를 의식한 결과라고 풀이하고 있다. 삼성은 갤럭시S부터 4인치대 화면을 유지해왔다. 갤럭시S가 4인치, 갤럭시S2가 4.3인치인 가운데 최근 공개된 갤럭시S3는 4.8인치로 늘어났다.

이처럼 삼성전자가 화면을 점점 키우는 것은 검색ㆍ동영상ㆍ게임ㆍe북 등 사용자들이 대부분 스마트폰을 ‘보면서 즐기는’ 형태로 사용하면서 보기에 편한 화면의 중요성이 커졌기 때문이다.

이에 최근 출시된 팬택의 베가레이서2, LG전자의 옵티머스LTE2 모두 4.8인치와 4.7인치로 5인치에 가깝게 제작됐다.

업계 한 관계자는 “아이폰보다 나중에 나온 스마트폰들이 4인치대로 출시되면서 아이폰의 화면은 어느새 작아서 불편하다는 인식이 자리잡게 됐다”며 “꼿꼿한 애플도 변하는 스마트폰 트렌드를 거스를 수는 없었을 것”이라고 말했다.
